Stevens accounted for the Ocean Beach Claiming Purse at threequarters which was the sixth race on the program The victory of this fouryearold son of Pennant and Sun glow II was entirely unlocked for and in consequence he was but weakly supported Coffield Joella J and Lucky Button were the favored ones and when Brilliant Ray showed them the way to the winning post there were but few of the big crowd on hand that applauded his return to the winners ring However those who did back him Avere rewarded for he paid the good price of 3 for each dollar invested investedAs As to the race it must be said that Bril ¬ liant Ray recovered his speed suddenly True he was away like a bullet leaving a gun and Stevens hustled him along at a fast pace and rounding the far turn he showed a good three lengths to the good Closest to him raced Lucky Button with Cof ¬ field and the big sprinter Doctor Corbett In the homestretch where the fans looked for Brilliant Ray to toss it up he fooled them by finishing with a rare exhibition of game ness that carried him home first by three quarters of a length ahead of Lucky Button That filly had her troubles saving second place from Cofileld which closed fast and only failed to capture the second money by inches Doctor Corbett which was promi ¬ nent to the last sixteenth tired from there on and finished fourth The speedy filly Joella J which came in for a heavy backing failed dismally and perhaps her previous race at a mile had a tendency to dull her speed Yesterday she seemed to race slug ¬ gishly and her lookedfor usual stretch rush did not
