AUSPICIOUS BEGINNING Notime and Ultimo Successful in First Havana Appearance Big Weight Anchors Belle of Elizabethtowtt West Meath an Outstanding Surprise HAVANA Cyba January 12 Firsttime starters of the meeting won the two features at Oriental Park this afternoon when Thomas Monahans fouryearold Notime was vie torious in the second race and J VV Pangles Ultimo finished in front to beat tho best sprinters which have gone to tho post here this winter in the Alert Handicap a dash oC five and a half furlongs in which Belle oC Elizabethtown carried top weight of 126 pounds Ultimo ridden by G Walls set a fast pace from the start hugged the inside rail all the way and staggered home a head in front of Edgar Allan Poe which in turn beat Dr Hickman by a nose for second place There were seven starters which finished less than three lengths apart as they flashed past the winning mark Ultimo has the reputation of being an erratic horse but he was on his good behavior this af ternoon and ran straight and true all the way Doug Car ¬ ter who is handling him has worked won ¬ ders with the horse since he took him over last fall fallNotime Notime was a 1 to 2 shot in the second race and was ridden by McLaughlin who rated her off the pace until straightened out in the homestretch where he brought her to the outside He assumed an easy lead in the last sixteenth and won going away from Sala ¬ mander which made all the pace paceLady Lady Frakes started none too well in her race but was easily the best when she got settled in her stride and moved up on the outside with a rush drawing away m the stretch run and beating American Legion by two and a half lengths lengthsBATTLE BATTLE MOUNTAIN BEST BESTBattle Battle Mountain an outsider proved best in the fourth Stutts rode him with good judgment and waited until after he had gone a half mile before making an effort When called on Battle Mountain moved up fast on the extreme outside of the others and wear ¬ ing down the tiring Parol in the final eighth got up and beat him by half a length Fair and Warmer the favorite met with some in ¬ terference m the last sixteenth and Fields was forced to take her up at that critical stage of the contest contestWest West Meath proved a big surprise in the fifth McLaughlin waited with him until tho last quarter before making an effort and in the stretch run assumed an easy lead to win going away by two and a half lengths from Discussion DiscussionW W Dondas who left here in the middle of December to spend the holidays with his family in Kentucky returned this morning morningJ J Brunncr was suspended ten days and Lancet four days daysThe The news of the death at New Orleans of starter A B Dado caused profound grief among horsemen at Oriental Park who not only admired his professional skill but loved him for his many sterling qualities Mr Dade had a host of friends all over tho United States who will mourn his passing Manager Frank J Bruen starter Jim Milton and judge Hachmeister cabled their condo ¬ lences today to the widow widowAmong Among todays vistors at the track were Mr and Mrs II Piffard of New York City and II M Crossy mining engineer of Minne ¬ apolis who are quartered at the Hotel Al mandares
