Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of February I 1903 Sunday no racing E R Bradley also has some horses at Mem ¬ phis and a brother to Jiminez which is called Common Bird is a goodlooking colt coltC C R Ellison has quite a promising band of two and threeyearolds at Memphis The horse Chicago will be interested in is Skilful He is in perfect health but his trainer has not asked much of him yet He is not a large colt but a compact goodlooking horse G C Bennett has moved his entire stable to Memphis from New Orleans He shipped fortyfive horses altogether In this band are twentynine twoyearolds Abe Frank looks fine and in fact all his stable looks good with the exception of Canyon which is on the ailing list At Memphis S C Hildreth has his American Derby candidate Topsoil which has grown to be a goodsized threeyearold Shannon the man in charge of Hildreths horses is quite sweet on him Topsoil is a nervous high strung horse like most of the Top Gallants He could not be called good looking as he is inclined to be leggy Fayonius in this stable is doing well While playing hi the paddock at Mr Lyne3 Larchmont Stud William Hale a promising threeyearold colt belonging to Charles Head Smith was so badly injured that it will be a long time before he can be trained if ever The colt in rearing and plunging got his foot caught in the prongs of a lowgrowing tree and in attempting to extricate himself he al ¬ most tore himself to pieces straining his knee and shoulder badly J W Schorr has about the finestlooking band of horses at Memphis that he has ever owned A remarkable fact about Schorrs1 sta ¬ ble is that every horse in it is in active train ¬ ing and he has not one ailing horse All are under the saddle every morning He has four American Derby candidates They are doin all that is asked of them and are looking the picture of health Spencer Reiff and Bob McLean are both big strapping horses but i Spencer Reiff is a little inclined to be leggy r and is a little ratty on the track Rightful the half brother to Endurance by Right is 3 thought well of by Walker but he has not t grown much Janeway is a good looking colt I as he always was
