DIEGO Cal February 13 The Lin ¬ coln birthday program featured by the Own ¬ ers Handicap at a mile and forty yards saw the good horse Rebuke from the stable of Commander J K L Ross returned an easy winner from a small but select band of longdistance runners A heavy track and the light weight of 85 pounds gave him an advantage and after suffering a tempestu ¬ ous journey he triumphed in a manner which left little doubt in the minds of those who watched him perform that he was much the theI I best horse in the race On the strength of her previous speedy performances Ten Buttons from the C B Irwin establishment was installed the favo ¬ rite Irwin has a wonderful run of luck and there is no telling when it will break Thus spoke the public as they backed the fleet daughter of Ten Point The conserva ¬ tive ones however cottoned to Rebuke the slashing black son of Dick Finnell Then there were others to place their faith in Sunnyland and Serapis while John S Rear don was almost friendless friendlessAs As to the race it must be said that Rebuke was pounds the best He began fast when the barrier was released and while taking the first turn Sunnyland collided with him and he was almost knocked sideways That alone was enough to take the starch out of the Ross crack But Rebuke is a little black sturdy horse and he can fairly fly in the mud That tells the story Despite losing many lengths while rounding the first turn he quickly overhauled the leaders and by the time the far turn was reached he was racing in a contending position positionTEX TEX BUTTONS FAILS BADLY BADLYEntering Entering the homestretch it was discernible that Ten Buttons was done for and it was then that Rebuke ranged up alongside of her He raced with her for but a moment then j went on about his business and drew out in a long lead to win with speed in reserve The contest for second money was most spirited with Ten Buttons and Serapis fight ¬ ing it out The former was victorious get ¬ ting the decision of the judges by a nose noseA A semiholiday brought out another big crowd to the Tijuana track many visitors from Los Angeles and San Francisco re ¬ maining over for the extra afternoon of the sport Old Sol played hide and seek in the clouds and for the most of the afternoon weather conditions were disagreeable with overcoats a necessity necessityNonsuit Nonsuit in the opener j t rive and a half furlongs finally found a spot where he could set Ivis own pace and at oddson he won with little difficulty from Ermitana and Lola Fluke FlukeJockey Jockey Pctzoldt having ridden the first winner made it two in a row when he sent Black Pat into a long lead in the stretcli to win the second by two and a half lengths from Cannonball Coombs was backed into favoritism but after showing early speed he faded away and finished in fifth place placeThe The muddy course acted as a balm to the dicky legs of old Rifle and that superlative mudlark simply played with the others op ¬ posed to him in the third and finished the threequarters mile journey with eight lengths to spare from Billy Gibson and Nellie Harper So great was his speed that he outdistanced his opponents in
