THE WAG SURPRISES Furnishes Upset in Taking Meas ¬ ure of Tony Sue by Nose Latter Medium of Heavy Plunge Pony Express and Wild Cat CatProve Prove Disappointments HAVANA Cuba February 13 The Cana ¬ dianowned The Wag upset what was in ¬ tended as a good thing when he got up in the final strides in the second race to beat JTony Sue by a nose Tony Sue had worked in sensational time for this race was heavily backed and went to the post an even money favorite Lilley sent her to the front soon after the start but rounding the far turn Walls brought up The Wag and the pair entered the homestretch on almost even terms At the eighth pest it looked as it Tony Sue would outgame the other horse but just before reaching the winning mark she tired and The Wag got his nose in front in the final strides stridesTommy Tommy Burns added another to his list of winners he has ridden at this meeting when he landed the weakhearted Mary Rock three parts of a length in front of Sovereign II in the first race The winner led all the way but tired at the end endHUROJf HUROJf II ALL THE WAT WATHuron Huron II made a runaway of the third He got off with a good start and Grooa rushed him into a long lead in the first eighth At the finish he led Tom Norris by a good length The latter finished a couplo of lengths in front of Darnley which camo from behind in the stretch run and finished with a great burst of speed Spods was messed about the entire race and was beaten by a nose for the short end of the purse purseOn On paper the fourth race looked like a twohorse contest The speculation was divided between Pony Express and Wild Cat but both proved disappointments and were beaten by Faithful Girl which led all the way and won in a driving finish by a half length from Pony Express which boat Wild Cat the same distance for second place I Miss Dixie proved an easy winner in the fifth Finlcy waited with her until rounding the far turn before making a move and at the top of the stretch Miss Dixie passed tha leader on the outside and drew away into a commanding lead Brennan hard ridden through the homestretch could never get to the winner which beat him by a length lengthDISTINGUISHED DISTINGUISHED VISITORS VISITORSSeveral Several hundred physicians comprising about half the passenger list of the British steamship Vandyck which arrived at Ha ¬ vana from New York Monday en tour of the West Indies and Central and South America were guests of the Jockey Club today Among them were some of the most noted physicians in the United States StatesOther Other visitors included C V Brandt an architect of Detroit Mich Charles II Bolin a steel manufacturer of Detroit J G Burns of Philadelphia and John R Stanley of New York YorkRoger Roger Sullivan and wife arrived in Havana from their home at Covington Ky Monday and were busy receiving friends and greet ¬ ings at Oriental Park Mr Sullivan who was calculator at the mutuel department at the local track several years ago is now chief bookkeeper for the Kentucky Jockey Club ClubMike Mike Daly the veteran turfman departed for New Orleans where he will take charge of the horses belonging to J F Hynes and N Brenner which were shipped to the Crescent City last Saturday SaturdayJ J Chao purchased Split Grass from W J Young and will ship him to Porto Rico at the conclusion of the Oriental Park meeting
