Here and There on the Turf Preakness Stakes and Ken ¬ tucky Derby DerbyCandidates Candidates Soon to Be in Training TrainingChances Chances of Winter Raced Ones It will not be long now before there will be news of how the candidates for the Preak ¬ ness Stakes and ths Kentucky Derby are shap ¬ ing up for those two big races There is bound to be more interest in each race this year than there was in 1922 for the reason there is no clash in their dates and it is safe to assume that several which race in the Preakness Stakes on May 12 will also be started in the Kentucky Derby to be rim May 19 19This This arrangement of the dates is certain to result in a batter race for each and there is iswonderful wonderful opportunity for the best three yearold in May to take a big lead over all the others which may be sufficient to keep him at the top of the money winners through the racing season seasonThese These races each have an added money value of 50000 and in 1919 Sir Barton was the winnner of both and finished the best money winner of the year over all ages Of course Sir Barton was the best threeyearold of the year as his subsequent races demonstrated but winnnig the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes gave him a big advantage over the others othersIn In 1919 the Kentucky Derby was a race with 20000 added while the Preakness Stakes had an added money value of 25000 At ths present value of the two races any colt that could win both of them would at once earn more than Sir Barton did all through 1919 when he headed the list listSeldom Seldom has there been more uncertainty at this time of the year as to the best threeyear old There were so many twoyearolds that all gave unmistakable evidence of truly good class without any one standing out as cham ¬ pion over the others that the threeyearold champion might come from any one of almost a dozen sources sourcesThe The races run by Willis Sharpe Kilmers Sallys Alley Montfort Jones Oui Oui and Edward R Bradleys Blossom Time in the fall of the year suggest that the fillies are well able to hold their own with the best of the colts in both the Preakness and the Derby DerbyThere There is no telling it might be another filly year as it was in 1915 when Rhine Maiden won the Preakness Stakes and Regret took the Kentucky Derby DerbyThees Thees are the only fillies that figure on the roster of either one of these rich races up to this tune tuneIt It is seldom indeed that the threeyearold which is campaigned in the winter cuts much of a figure in either the Preakness Stakes or the Kentucky Derby and there have been no developments at any one of the thrcs winter tracks that should give any concern These have the advantage of a certain amount of seasoning but it is not the custom to race the best threeyearolds through the winter mouths When a real champion is developed between November and April it is because when he was sentenced to winter racing there was no expectation that he would develop into a champion championAt At New Orleans there have been some three yearold developments but they cannot be rated as of real Derby quality and when they meet the aristocrats that have been resting through the cold winter months it will be found where they really belong in the turf scheme schemeSeasoning Seasoning counts for much in early racing for it will be remembered that Race King be ¬ cause he came to Belmont Park hard and fit from racing at Benning was able to run the mighty Sysonby to a dead heat in the Metro ¬ politan Handicap of 1905 1905But But those cases arc rare indeed and there is no good reason this year for looking with expectancy to any of the threeyearolds that have been racing at New Orleans Havana or Tijuana as possible winners of either of the big 50000 races for threeyearclds threeyearcldsThere There seems to be one possible exception to the rule that the winter threeyearolds do not come back capable of winning the big three yearold races This one is Eulalia daughter of Spanish Prince II and Alice Dudley by Electioneer This filly has been racing for Clyde Phillips at New Orleans has won three races recently and has raced in a manner that has induced a good price being offered for her No secret is made of the fact that the effort was made to purchase with a view to sending her after the Pimlico Oaks OaksEulalia Eulalia was sold to George Saportas by Spaldiug Lowe Jenkins for a paltry 400 last fall Mr Saportas had visions of convertinj her into a steeplechaser where he has his best success Later Saportas was willing to take 600 profit on his purchase and disposed of her to Phillips for 1000 Now that Eulalia has shown ability to go on in good company Phillips has refused an offer for the filly that runs into five figures figuresOf Of course it is frequent that one loses his perspective at the winter tracks but Eulalia at this time is surely one of the notable de ¬ velopments of winter racing racingBlue Blue Nose and Setting Sun the two that were beaten by this filly have each been shown to possess good class in their various races but it would require a wide stretch of imagination to bring them alongside of some of the potential Preakness Stakes and Ken ¬ tucky Derby timber of the year Setting Sun is a gelded son of Olambala and Sunburst that began his career under the colors of Richard T Wilson his breeder breederBlue Blue Nose is a son of Black Toney and Benanet that still races under the silks of his breeder Edward R Bradley His races at New Orleans have made him seem consider ¬ ably better than ordinary The fact that Set ¬ ting Sun is a gelding eliminates him from the Preakness Stakes but in any event nothin he has done seems to warrant starting him in either the Pimlico or the Churchill Downs
