Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of February 14 1903 Racing at New Orleans Newport and Ingle side Jockey Lindsey was the riding star at New Orleans winning with Honolulu Birch Broom and Ben Chance James B Haggin has secured from W C Whitney the race horse Nasturtium and the horse has been transferred from La Belle to Elmendorf Stud Farm Lexington Ky Wheth ¬ er Mr Haggin has leased or bought Nastur ¬ tium from Mr Whitney no one appears to know Nasturtium is now four years old He is by Watercress Margerique by Order and will be remembered as Mr Whitneys candi ¬ date for the Epsom Derby last year when he was shipped to England with as much care as if he had been a prince He cost Mr Whitney 50000 as a twoyearold and won for him the Flatbush and other good stakes At Elm endorf he will be the stable companion of the famous Water Color a rival som of Water The De Soto Handicap was the magnet that drew a large crowd to the Fair Grounds at New Orleans today The result was a sur ¬ prise to the form followers who had selected Ed Trotters big sprinter Scorpio as the logi ¬ cal winner Josette carrying the colors of J U Strode turned up the winner having a sixlength advantage at the finish There was quite a difference in the weights carried by Scorpio and Josette Scorpio having the burden of 120 pounds in the saddle and Jo ¬ sette 93 pounds The track was a sea of mud and jockey Odom who had the mount on Scorpio elected to follow the pacemaker to the threequarters post but the weight told and he had all he could do to save second place from Royal Deceiver DeceiverThe The newly instituted 10000 Hawthorne Handicap lacks just one of having received one hundred nominations but in its ninety nine entries will be found the names of the cream of the western handicap division There is this point of interest attaching to this big race That the weights are due Mareh 2 making it the first local event to be handi capped this year Manager Kuhls estimate of the relative merits of the good horses en gaged will be awaited with impatience It will no doubt be the medium of much ante post betting which whichwill will be much affected in the running of the Montgomery Handicap at Memphis the Citizens Handicap at Nashville and results at Louisville The fouryearold division is remarkably prominent in this race there being no less than thirtysix of that age entered including such stars as McChesney AllanaDale Abe Frank Lucien Appleby Aladdin Terra Firma Runnels Wyeth Otis Eveah G Bessie Sparh Harry New Jordan Lord Quex Owenton Belles Commoner Hood ¬ wink Old Hutch Glen Watern and Inventor
