SKETCH OF SPENDTHRIFT One of the Finest Specimens of ofThoroughbred Thoroughbred Ever Foaled Attained Fame in Stud Spendthrift foaled in 1S78 was by Aus ¬ tralian from Aerolite He had as good blood as any even the most famous Amer ¬ ican thoroughbred could boast Australian son of West Australian and Emilia and Aerolite daughter of Lexington and Florine by Glencoe and Melody gave him crosses of the greatest American and English pedi ¬ grees greesHe He traced to Matchem in the paternal line and had the blood of Herod and Eclipse as well as that of later ancestry of the fore ¬ most rank It has been sard of him that he was one of the best horses ever stripped on this continent and one of the finest speci ¬ mens of thoroughbred horses ever foaled foaledAs As a twoyearold he won every race in which he was started In his threeyearold form he won the Belmont and the Lorillard Stakes and the Champion Stakes at Mon mouth Park His victory for the Lorillard Stakes was one of the finest ever seen for that race In the field of eleven which he defeated on that occasion were Harold Monitor Magnetism and others In the Travers and Kenner Stakes he was beaten by Falsetto FalsettoHe He was purchased by James R Keene and sent to England but was not successful there although he was started for the Cambridgeshire Being returned to this country he was sent to the stud after he had run several races He attained greater fame through his progeny than by his own performances on the turf The most cele ¬ brated of his produce have been Kingston Lamplighter Pickpocket Speedwell Laz zarone Defaulter Prodigal Golden Reel Speculation Bankrupt and Stockton StocktonIn In 1893 sixtytwo of his sons and daugh ¬ ters started in 1055 races being first in 113 and in the following year fifty of his produce started in 652 races of which they won 83
