FAVORITES IN CLOVER Take Most of the Jefferson Park Races Gallantly 130 Pounds Tippity Witchet Rewards His Friends NEW ORLEANS La February 17 S N Holmans good handicap horse Best Pal added to his laurels this afternoon by carry ¬ ing 130 pounds to victory in the mile and a sixteenth handicap which featured todays Jefferson Park card Following him closely and putting up a spirited contest came Crack o Dawn with Fantoche heading Blarney Stone in third place Only four started in the race and Best Pal ruled an oddson favorite He raced in close pursuit of Crack o Dawn from the start and ranged alongside of him in the last eighth He seemed about to tire under his steadying weight but roused up when struck with the whip and woro Crack o Dawn down in the last few strides to win by a neck Crack o Dawn was six lengths before Fantoche Best Pal covered tha mile and a sixteenth in 1 AG which is only threefifths of a second from the track record made by Sun God carrying 110 pounds poundsAn An immense attendance was present at the track this afternoon even though the cold weather continued It moderated consider ¬ ably as the afternoon progressed There was considerable activity in the ring this after ¬ noon and the thirtynine layers were inade ¬ quate to handle the business with dispatch dispatchCLOSE CLOSE PIXISIIES THE KULE KULEClose Close finishes developed with all the dashes and furnished interesting racing racingThe The threequarters handicap in which acme of the best here met was particularly close and had the big throng cheering lus ¬ tily Tippity AVitchet and Centimeter were joint favorites here but Barnes astride Cen ¬ timeter got that horse virtually left at tho post causing his elimination Tippity Wit ¬ chet won but only after he had put up one of the best performances of his honorable career He just did outstay Barracuda with the suddenly improved Auntie May landing in third place On the stretch turn it ap ¬ peared as if Auntie May would be the winner but fihe shortened her stride in tho last seventy yards Tippity Witchet carried 122 pounds and his performance was lustily applauded applaudedFavorite Favorite backers got away in their stride in tho opening dash when they centered on Whalebone as the likely one to land the purse He did after leading for the entire iace Ogarite finished second and Guvnor third thirdWEAK WEAK HIDE BEATS CHIVA CHIVAChiva Chiva was at oddson in the second race but Smallwood by his weak ride contributed to his defeat Bessie Leighton getting up in tho last stride to win by a nose Tender Seth finished third Some excitement was created at the start of the fifth race when Superbum tossed Chalmers over her head in a false breakaway and proceeded to canter away a quarter before again being caught Kewpie ONeil was a receding favorite in the race and after making the pace to tile stretch quit badty in the last eighth Then Sam Frank won out by a scant length from Superbum The latter at one time was almost a sixteenth back of the leaders and closed an immense gap Double Cross fin ¬ ished in third place placeBuxom Buxom finally succeeded in landing a purse for W H Fizer She beat an ordinary band which started in the closing race Pastoral which had been the leader from the start held on to second place with Pirate McGee third Tom Cassidy was installed the favor ¬ ite here and had a good chance to win when he suddenly began swerving out His rider Abel was suspended for three days by the starter for disobedience at the post postL L T Bauer whose Tippity Witchet won the Hope Haven Purse donated 100 out of the purse money moneyJoseph Joseph A Murphy departed tonight for Chicago where he will attend the Derby dinner to be held there next Monday Dur ¬ ing his absence C W Hay who officiated as one of the stewards at the last Fair Grounds meeting will be in the stewards stand standWilliam William Ryan returned from Chicago to ¬ day and will make an indefinite stay here hereA A tidy sum was realized bya collection this afternoon for tJie Hope Haven Farm Father Weinhoven in charge of the Hope Haven work was at the track receiving contribu ¬ tions
