ABADANE AND TEN BUTTONS Carry C B Irwin Colors in Front in Tijuanas Main Race Contest frothing 3Ioro Than a Canter for forAbadanc Abadanc Much Interest in TwoYear TwoYearOld Old Contest Won by Ida Frances SAN DIEGO Cal February 17 C B Irwins colors were conspicuous Friday at the Tijuana track where before a bumper ladies day crowd his entry of Abadane and Ten Buttons ran onetwo in the afternoons feature This was a handicap at one and onesixteenth miles and with these two assuming the lead at the rise of the barrier the entry could have been proclaimed the winner long before the finish unless some ¬ thing unforeseen happened happenedQuality Quality and distinction as regards thor ¬ oughbreds sported colors in the feature race Besides the Irwin standard bearers Abadane and Ten Buttons there was John Paul Jones a mighty shifty horse in the best kind of company Then there was East Indian win ¬ ner of four stakes at Tijuana last year Serapis a winner on the metropolitan tracks not forgetting Halu Buckhorn II and Dorius DoriusThe The race was little more than an exercise gallop for Abadane Ten Buttons took the lead at the rise of the barrier and set a fast pace for the going Behind the mare raced Abadane under the guiding hands of that crafty veteran jockey Eddie Dugan Wisely he kept his mount under restraint until the last turn was reached Here Dugan gave Abadane free rein and in less time than it takes to tell about it the Irwin crack was in command with Ten Buttons following in his wake Once in front Abadane increased his lead and although he was easing up at the goal post his margin of victory was five lengths In second place came Ten Buttons and in justice to that speedy mare it must be said that she was also taken under re ¬ straint by jockey Long when it was ap ¬ parent that her stablemate held a first mort ¬ gage on the winning end of the purse Third money fell to John Paul Jones That horse vas heavily backed by his stable connections but he really never had a chance to take the measure of the winner True he was away slowly and lost much ground by being forced wide by Buckhorn II while rounding the first turn but it is doubtful if he could have got within striking distance of the winner had he not encountered bad racing luck luckABADAXES ABADAXES SMASHING RACE RACEAbadanes Abadanes victory yesterday under the crushing impost of 123 pounds proclaims him one of the topnotch handicap horses now quartered at Tijuana His race was a spar ¬ kling one from every angle He was giving away much weight but despite this he was so fleet of foot that he could have gone to the front at any stage of the race His time of 147 over a track which was deep and slow was indeed a meritorius performance and it was to be regretted that he is not nominated for the rich Coffroth Handicap HandicapNine Nine twoyearolds paraded to the post in the opening dash which was at threeeighths and much interest was manifested in some of the first starters These were Ida Frances and Rock Heather owned by J W Marchbank that stanch western patron of the thoroughbred who journeyed East last summer to purchase a string of juveniles at the FasigTipton sales at Saratoga Rock Heather by virtue of the fact that he is a brother in blood to Firm Friend and a half brother to Audacious held the center of the stage in the paddock before the race Much Continued on twelfth page ABADANE AND TEN BUTTONS Continued from first page was expected of him but he showed in his effort that he is as green as the hills of Mexico The winner turned up in his stable mate Ida Frances a pleasing looking filly by Sweep and Lady Eastman She showed abundant speed and her stamina cannot be questioned for after standing a drive for almost a quarter of a mile she outstayed Golden Orb to the extent of a neck Golden Orb had his troubles in saving second place as Irish Buzzer was pressing him hard and only a head separated these two at the fin ¬ ish Seths Alibi which nad been backed into strong favoritism was fourth He did not have the best of racing luck being crowded at the start and perhaps his race can be improved in the future futureAnother Another good finish came about in the third race at threequarters in which the favorite Caamano managed to head Doves roost in the final strides with Cannonball only a neck away The trio presented a pleasing picture as they battled for first honors and their struggle had the packed grandstand roused to a frenzy of excitement as they dashed past the judges stand standEye Eye Bright which shared the honors of being the public choice with Shelbyville found his task an easy one in the fourth He went to the front turning for home and won by three lengths from Double Eye Had the latter won he would have paid 11080 for 1 1Jockey Jockey Slaughter who seems to know the blind horse Kinglike better than any rider here performed the unexpected with his mount when he brought him from behind to win by a head from Angela in the concluding race of the day Angela led him by open daylight until within shadow of the finish where Kinglike wore her down to catch the eyes of the judges in the last stride strideTwpclaims Twpclaims were registered in the seventh nice and when they were opened it was found that B Creech had taken Delhimar while K E McGregor had added Woodie Montgomery to his increasing stable The consideration in both cases was 100 100Jockey Jockey Cantrell is spending f ive days on the ground as a result of arousing the ire of starter Morrissey on account of disobe ¬ dience while at the post postDr Dr D T Ogle reports that he has fired the ankles of the mare Lavinia and that Colonel li L Baker will turn her out for the summer at W L Stanfields ranch near Tijuana TijuanaBill Bill Blackwell is another to which the fir ¬ ing irons were applied and he will he an ab sentee from the races for at least sixty days
