BREEDING AT HURRICANA FortyTwo Matrons and Seven SevenStock Stock Horses Make Up the theSanford Sanford Nursery NEW VORK N V March 28 While Hoi lie Hughes is making ready twentylive horses that are to carry the silks of John Sanford this year this is only a part of the turf activity of the Amsterdam sportsman Up at the llurricana Farm there is a mag ¬ nificent breeding establishment that has long since earned fame as a thoroughbred nursery Many a champion first saw the light of day at llurricana in the days of the late General Stephen Sanford and both John Sanford his son and Stephen San ford his grandson will doubtless carry on the famous establishment establishmentJohn John Sanford has done much for racing on both sides of the Atlantic and his many importations to this country have greatly enriched the American blood lines Stephen Sanford is at present in England where he gained international fame as the owner of Sergeant Murphy winner of this years Grand National the most famous jumping race in the world Voung Sanford is the first Ameri ¬ can to ever win that coveted race raceBut But of the breeding at Hnrricana There are fortytwo mares at the farm and no fewer than seven stock horses These in ¬ clude old Isidor now twentynine years of age but still possessed of rare vigor in spite of his venerable years yearsOther Other stallions arc Archaic the 575000 im ¬ portation George Smith winner of a Ken ¬ tucky Derby for Mr Sanford Nassovian Paragon II one that raced at Laurel last October Chuctanunda and Sand Mole This lastnamed stallion is a brother to Mahubah the dam of Man o War WarThe The wealth of stock horses affords Mr San ¬ ford an opportunity to breed publicly and five marcs arrived at the farm recently to go to the court of Archaic These were Au ¬ gust Belmonts Felicity dam of Sporting DIood that recently gave birth to a brother of that good horse H K Knapps Sprite Gifford A Cochrans Adrianna and Days Over and Richard T Wilsons Minuet MinuetThere There have already been ten foals at the farm and many others are expected almost daily
