Y.. April 7.— Fine spring weather Saturday morning brought more horses out for gallops at Belmont 1ark than on any previous day this year. Itecent raina had left the going slow, but this did not interfere seriously with the training and several of the Derby candidates quartered at the course were given useful workouts. Among the visitors at the course were Mr. and Mrs. Payne Whitney, who were interested spectators while trainer S. P. Harlan sent the Greentree Stable horses through their paces. Cherry Pie, Mrs. Whitneys favorite candidate for the Kentucky Derby, was tho center of attraction when he took the track with Exodus for a mile workout J. McTag-gart, the stables contract jockey, had the mount on the three-year-old. The two went along at an easy gait for the first half mile, completing that distance in 53, but then both riders went to work and the next quarter mile was run in 27%, making the time for the three-quarter 1 :20%. In the last quarter mile Cherry Pie was under a drive, finishing out the mile behind his older stable mate in 1 :47%. This was excellent time considering the condition of the track. Trainer Harlan sent Tryster, which he is training for the Westmont Stable of J. Leon-. ard Replogle, along with Galantman and Moonraker for an easy three-quarters fan 1 :23. Tryster was fighting for his head as he finished under a hard pull. There are a dozen two-year-olds in the Greentree Stable. They were the first, to work. All of the youngsters showed good speed in their quarter-mile trials and a few of them were allowed to finish out three- eighths. PLEASED WITH GOSHAWK. Trainer Carroll Shilling had Gifford A. Cochrans Derby candidate Goshawk out for a three-quarters work with June Grass. -Jockey Nicklaus had the mount on the $."0.0U0 three-year-old. He rated the colt along in front according to instructions and allowed him to finish out the distance in 1 :20%. Trainer Shilling was much pleased with the colts showing and complimented the rider. June Grass has filled out during the winter and appeared to be in fine fettle. His ap-e pearance indicates that he is better than ever before and his way of going also shows improvement. Clendennin J. Ryan, owner of the Oakridge Stable, spent this morning at Belmont Park watching his horses at work under the watchful eye of trainer John Loftus. All the Oakridge horses were given useful trials, but nothing in the way of speed was attempted. The horses are all in good health and with the weather improving they will be sent along rapidly. g The main course at Belmont Tark has been opened to the traineis only a few days. T. J. Healey, Max Hirsch. Louis Feustel and Wil-liam Karrick did all of their training Satur- day over the main course. Trainer Simon Healy. whose stable now contains thirty-one horses, also spent a busy morning. Nine of the thoroughbreds in hla stable are the property of the Syndicate Stable. Over at Jamaica the going was also slow, making really fast works impossible. Fred Taral sent the Riviera Stables Derby can-UJ didate Great Man three-quarters in 1 :20 ana Miss Star went a good half mile in 53. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Vivadou were at the track to watch their horses work.
