Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of Oct. 14, 1903 Racing at Brighton Beach, Worth and St. Louis. The horse that was exhibited to the stewards in the paddock at Brighton Beach last Monday as The Fiddler was shipped to Pine Bluff, Ark.f Saturday. When turfmen learned of his departure they expressed surprise, for the impression had gained ground since the favorable verdict of the stewards as to his identity that The Fiddler would be seen in other races in the East. The twelve days of racing if the Morris Park fall meeting produced 45,660 for winning owners, a daily average of 12,138, with William C. Whitney the chief winner, his total reaching 4,160. John E. Madden was next with 1,245. The Iatters good colt The Minute Man headed the list of winning horses with ,315, closely pressed by Land of Clover with ,080. Jockey Fuller led the jockey list with a percentage of 27, followed by Frank ONeill with .22. Colonial Girl was pushed to her limit to beat Sam Hildreths Witfull in the mile race at Worth today. This race was the third for all-aged fillies and mares. I Know led on sufferance . for the first three-eighths, where Colonial Girl assumed a commanding lead and appeared to have things her own way when turning for home, but in the final eighth Wit-full moved up rapidly, causing jockey Hall to go to the whip on Colonial Girl. All through the final sixteenth the latter was under pun- ishment, sticking it out to win by a nose. At the sale of horses in training and yearlings belonging to William C. Whitney at Morris Park last Friday E. R. Thomas, represented by his partner, Alexander Shields, bought the two-year-old colt Stalwart, which won the Champagne Stakes from Pulsus on Wednesday, for 2,000. When the colt had been knocked down to Shields Mr. Whitney expressed a desire to repurchase Stalwart at the price paid, but the animal was sent away to the Thomas-Shields barn. Seventeen head, owned by Mr. Whitney, realized 2,575. Perry Belmonts River Pirate was sold to R. W. Walden foi ,600.
