EMPIRE CITY RACING Starts Off Pleasantly with a Big Crowd Present. Exodus Wins the Scars dale Handicap in a Nobly Contested Finish with Firm Friend. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct- 17. Racing moved over to James Butlers Empire City track today for the last meeting of the New York Season. There was a tremendous crowd to welcome the return of the thoroughbreds to "Westchester. The weather was pleasant and the track at its best. The feature was the Scarsdale Handicap, over the mile route, and it brought about a good contest when the Greentree Stables Exodus got up in time by a great stretch rush to beat Sandy McNaugh-tons Firm Friend home, with Frank E. Browns Hephaistos beating Knobbie for third place. The race was worth ,130 to the winner. The presence of Stephen Donoghue at the course was an added attraction of the day and when Englands premier jockey, who has come over to fill his engagement to ride Papyrus Saturday, put in an appearance on the lawn he was fairly mobbed by a cheering crowd. Donoghue was escorted to the stewards stand to view the running of the Scars-dale Handicap by William Butler and watched every move of Earl Sande, who had the leg up on Knobbie. In this race L. M. Fator at once rushed to the front with Firm Friend and set a lively pace. Sande, after hustling Knobbie away, was content to save the son of Wrack within striking distance and both Exodus and Sun Pal were not far away. KNOBBIE TIRES BADLY. When coming to the stretch Sande called on Knobbie in an effort to go to Firm Friend, but the horse tired badly under the call and it was apparent that he was beaten. Firm Friend continued to show the way until well inside the final eighth, but was doing his best and Exodus was closing up fast on the outside. Exodus continued to wear the pacemaker down until at the end he poked his head in front to win by a half length, while Firm Friend saved second place from Hephaist03 by a length and a half. The first offering of the Yonkers meeting was a short three-quarters dash for selling plater two-year-olds, and I. J. Careys Pathan was an easy winner from R. T. Wilsons Forest Flower, with Apology third. Forest Flower and San Dimas did most of the leading, but Pathan raced easily into the lead in the last eighth to win with speed to spare. Forest Flower had no mishap and tired badly, but lasted long enough to "withstand the final rush of Apology and save second place by a head. Platers to race a mile and seventy yards met in the second offering and, in a rattling finish, P. S. P. Randolphs High Price was the winner from Abe Hallows Masquerado, with Billy Watts saving third money from Zealot. From a good start Coltiletti rushed Sweepy into the lead and Sylvan Springs and Zealot chased after him. Billy Watts and Masquerado were outrun early and dropped hack badly, while the others were in fairly close order. EASY FOR A3I0R PATRIAE. Only three went to the post for the short three-quarters claiming handicap and, after W. C. Clancys Hullabaloo and Edward Arlingtons Satellite had been withdrawn, it was not much of a trick for Mr3. E. M. Browns Amor Patriae to be an cany winner from F. E. Browns Wildrake and It. T. Wilsons Tangerine, which was the other starter. When Amor Patriae dashed Into a good early lead Lavcrne Fator wisely decided not to use Wildrake up In chasing him and was content to save the Brown thrco-ycar-old In Hccond place. This enabled him to meet and withstand the final challenge o Tangerine after making the turn Into the stretch. Scott Harlan made It a double for the Greentree Stable when he cent Moonrnkor to the poKt for the rnllc and seventy yards of the fifth race.
