ZEVS WORK DISAPPOINTS Eancocas Stars Mile and a Quarter in 2:09 on Wednesday Far from Impressive. NEW YORK, N. Y.. Oct. 17. There was another change of sentiment toward Papyrus among the horsemen today after the Rancocas Zev was worked a mile and a quarter at Belmont Park in 2:09 and the character of the move was far from being impressive. He had Little Chief for a running mate and at the end the four-year-old could readily have run away from the defender. What was particularly disappointing in the move, just as was the case in the Sunday work of Zev, was the manner in which he "tailed off", at the end. He galloped with all his sprinting dash through the early stages, but after covering the mile he was plainly tired and many of the watches caught his last quarter in 29 seconds, while the best that could be. given him for that part of the work was the quarter in 29 seconds. Laverne Fator had the leg up on Zev, while his brother L. M. Fator rode Little Chief. It is not known just what either colt carried, for both Faiors are light boys. One competent clocker furnished the following fractions for the move: First eighth in 11 ; quarter in 23 ; three-eighths in 35 ; half in 47; five-eighths in 59 ; three-quarters in 1:12 ; seven-eighths in 1:25; mile in 1:39; mile and an eighth in 1:54, and the mile and a quarter 2:09. Bringing this down furlong by furlong tells of how tho son of Tho Finn and Miss Kearney was dying away at the end of his move. This is what it shows in furlongs: 11. 11. 12, 11. 12, 12, 13, 13, 14 and 15 seconds. Thus it is shown how he was tiring at the end and he still had a quarter of a mile to cover before ho had completed the mile and a half that he has to run Saturday. After tho work Hildreth hurried Zev back to the stable, but it was plain that he was a more tired horse at the end of the move than was Papyrus when ho had completed his mile and a quarter Tuesday, It is true that Papyrus only ran the mile and a quarter in 2:10, but he did it witli consummate ease, and it was his final furlongs that were fast rather than his first ones, for it took him 54 seconds to run his first half mile, while his last half was covered in 50 seconds. There was no comparison between tho moves of tho two colts and now It is freely predicted that tho challenger will bo the favorlto bofore post time. Stephen Donoghue was at Belmont Park during tho Zev move and later ho galloped Papyrus a slow threo-quartcrs. Tho plan Is to have Donoghue glvo Papyrus his final work for the raco Thursday morning and doubtless there will bo a big crowd on hand to see tho Englishman perform. I
