RECALLS OLD-TIME MATCH In Memoriam-Zev Race Reminder of Ten Broeck-Mollie McCarty. Saturdays Contest the First Match Bun at the Downs. Since That Memorable Occasion in 1878. LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 13. Expectancy is more rife with the knowledge that Zev, now in the role of challenger for the three-year-old crown wrested from him at Latonia by Tn Memoriam, is now en route here and due to arrive Wednesday with several companions and retinue of caretakers, including trainer Samuel C. Hildrcth and jeekeys Sande and Fator. Precautionary measures have been taken by general manager Matt J. Winn of the Kentucky Jockey Club for the safety and comfort of the Sinclair-owned crack. In the throng that will congregate at Churchill Downs Saturday will be some whose memories will revert back to July 4, 1878, on the occasion of the memorable duel between Ten Broeck and Mollie McCarty. In some respects the duel that is to be staged between In Memoriam and Zev can be held similar, for it is an intersectional sporting affair, New York displacing California, the section that Mollie McCarty came from. Zev will represent the East on this occa-tlon, while In Memoriam, Kentucky bred and owned, will be a true representative of the Blue Grass State and its people. Forty-five years has brought many changes in the Churchill Downs, and if, perchance, some who witnessed the Mollie McCarty-Ten Broeck match, are again visiting the Downs for the first time since that occasion, they will find no trace of the old racing plant, except that the track proper, over which Mollie McCarty trailed home the Kentucky-owned rival, is still the same racing strip. It seems somewhat strange that In all the Intervening years since the Ten Broeck-Mollie McCarty race no match races have taken place over the Churchill Downs track and that In Memoriam and Zev are the first racers to renew single combat over the course. Interest in tho In Memoriam-Zev duel is not unlike that when Ten Broeck and Mollie McCarty met It had a countrywide significance and enthusiasts came from all parts of the continent. The mode of reaching the track from far-off points was not as comfortable as that of today. It took, quite a stalwart to mako the grade from California. In this day and time a trip here from New York is regarded as a pleasant jaunt, particularly when one has a luxurious private car attached to a special train at his disposal. For that reason the throng at Churchill Downs should be vastly greater than on Continued on twelfth page. 1 RECALLS OLD-TIME HATCH Continued from first pare. that memorable hot Independence day in 1878. There was considerable betting indulged in by partisans of Ten Broeck and Mdllie McCarty, just as there is now between the supporters of In Memoriam and Zev, a preponderance of California gold installed Mol-lie McCarty favorite, just as Eastern greenbacks will make Zev the favorite. Betting barometers have proven fickle too numerously in the past to prove anything before decision of a race, and the Kentuckians in this instance are just as confident that In Memoriam will down his challenger as they were in the case of Ten Broeck beating Moliie McCarty. There is no justification for Zev being an outstanding favorite over In Memoriam, as he is in the ante-post wagering now being indulged in. The only excuse that can be offered for it is that the mile and a quarter distance is said to be to Zevs liking more than a mile and three-quarters. This, however, can be offset by the fact that it appeared to those watching the race closely between the pair in the Latonia Championship Stakes that In Memoriam could have headed Zev at any time his jockey elected before or after a mile and a quarter had been traversed. Lately there has been excuses offered for Zevs defeat at Latonia and the one most frequently heard is that Sande used bad judgment in not permitting the colt to step along at his best pace instead of attempting a waiting race of it with a view to out-sprint his rivals in the last quarter. It is argued that on Saturday Sande will send Zev at a tremendously stiff pace from the start and exhaust In Memoriam in the first half mile. The only trouble to the successful consummation of this plan is that In Memoriam is some sprinter himself and will not let Zev get far away from him, and probably, like in the Latonia Championship Stakes, pass Zev when he is called on to do so. In Memoriam right now is at his top form. There is some question if Zev has not gone back to some extent. His winning race in the Pimlico Serial "Weigh t-f or-Age after his return from Latonia does, not prove much. He beat on that occasion an ordinary band. Arthur Board, who lost his two-year-old Dobson, when E. Trotter claimed the colt out of the sixth race last Saturday, has purchased from Lair and Parrish the two-year-old Bourbon Boy on private terms. The colt has been turned over to Pete Coyne to train.
