BARRACUDA IN FRONT Scores First Victory of Meeting in Principal Attraction. The Roll Call and Julia M. Triumphant Despite Meeting with Much Interference. NEW ORLEANS, La.. Jan. 23. The theat-, rical folk of these parts monopolized the racing limelight at the Fair Grounds this afternoon, the occasion being marked by the running of the St. Charles Players Cup Handicap, the Clara Joel Purse and the John Little Purse. In the St. Charles Players Cup Handicap some of the best in these parts engaged and it furnished the initial victory for S. N. Hol-nians Barracuda at this meeting. Barracuda was coupled with Best Pal and the pair came in for vast attention from the alleged sharps. Boseate II. was the favored one in the race and he led for the first mile of the mile and a sixteenth, with O. Henry his closest attendant, but when Barracuda challenged it was no great effort for him to pass the tiring leader to win under restraint. Boseate II., hard urged, succeeded in outstaying Lady Madcap for second place. Triumph was considered a sharp contender in the race, but he showed a dull performance and probably is more at home in muddy going. Trak conditions showed improvement and the starters in the different dashes found firm footing throughout the afternoon. Some of the contests were decidedly interesting and hard fought. J. WALLACE SUSPENDED. The John Little Purse at a mile and seventy yards, found The Boll Call the winner. Much interference developed during the running for which J. "Wallace, on Westwood, was held to blame and suspended by the stewards for ten days. The worst jam as a result of "Wallaces rough riding came at the first turn, when The Boll Call and Swcepy were boh knocked out of it. The Boll Call managed to recover -quickest and moved into a contending position before going a half mile, but Sweepy could never get back again on his stride until the race was practically over. He came determinedly in the last sixteenth, but The Boll Call by this time had the race won. Neddam, an outsider, outstayed Sweepy for second place. In the Clara Joel Purse more interference was noted, but this was unintentional. It would not have helped "Wilmer the "Wizard, however, had he won. The interference he subjected Julia M. to would have caused his disqualification had he finished in front of her. Julia M. was pounds the best. She was away slowly and diminutive Lang got all mixed up with her. She came with a rush in the stretch, but when going fastest "Wilmer the Wizard swerved over against her sharply causing her in turn to swerve over against some of the others and a general mix-up ensued. Julia M. came away in the last sixteenth to win well in hand. "Wilmer the "Wizard, hard ridden, held on long enough to stall off Devil Girl for second place. BARNEY GOOGLE WINNER. W. Perkins uncovered another juvenile winner in Barney Google, a colt by Frizzle Jeano. The youngster has been showing i some good preliminary trials and on the strength, of it, coupled with an inner post! j position, had caused him to rule an over-l j whelming favorite. He began from the barrier like a veteran and, displaying a high flight of speed, sprinted away from his opponents and won casing up. Night Shade and Dean H. staged a good battle for second place with Night Shade landing by half a length. Avispa proved best of an ordinary band that started in the second race. Far East and Avispa delayed the start for some time by their bad post behavior. Avispa managed to go Into the lead after reaching the stretch and won under restraint from Tempting, with Stamp holding on for third place. After his followers had suffered losses in eleven races, Parke managed finally to break the ice when he won on East Indian in the sixth race. He had to hustle his mount hard in he stretch to outstay Gondolier and: Ram kin. j Parke also accounted for the purse in the final race with Frosty Boy, which beat home Xanthos and Great Northern. j Threatening weather was again prevailing tins afternoon, but the rising temperature helped to bring out another big attendance. i The play in the ring was also improved and favorites and second choices carried off the honors, the thirty-nine layers in line having a disastrous session. j James OHara, extensively interested in the Bowie, Thorncliffe and Jefferson Park tracks, who has been here since the first of the year leaves tomorrow for a visit to California. He will return here about March 1. j Broomflax is said to have been in a bad way yesterday for his start in the sixth race and this morning showed a decided j lameness. He will probably be out of racing for some time. I
