THE ULSTER BY NOSE I Scores Narrowly in Most Inter- I esting Race at Havana. I I Miss Rosedale and True American I in Furious Battle Finality I Disappoints His Admirers." I - H HAVANA, Cuba, Jan. 23. The most inter- I esting contest of Wednesdays program at H Oriental Park came with the running of the H second race, in which the first live horses I were so closely grouped at the finish that I the- winner was uncertain until the official H placing was announced. The Ulster got the I decision by a nose, with Chile, Vulcanite, H Armistice and Mad Nell following in the I order named. It was a spirited battle all the I way through. The Ulster led from the start and hung on gamely when tiring at the end. H Clear skies and warm weather brought out H a goodly sized midweek crowd, which in- H eluded many newly arrived tourists. The H track showed some improvement, but was H still heavy and only the sturdy type of the H thoroughbred was at home in the going. H The Latonia turfman, W. Dondas, furnished H the winner of the opening race when Miss H Rosedale outlasted True American in a vigor- H cus finish. The pair dominated the running H throughout with True American on the inside H all the way. The latters rider appeared ex- H hausted near the end and was of little help to H his mount when the final test came. After the heavily backed Finality had led H by a wide gap to the stretch in the third H race, his supporters were given a jolt when H the McGraw racer tired badly and dropped H to the rear. This left a clear field for Blue H Bonnet and the daughter of Ballot quickly H took advantage of it and, moving into the H lead, drew away to win in a canter. H Trainer John J. McCafferty has a stable of H eleven horses at the Marianao track. His H only personal thoroughbred holding is Vice-Chairman, the others racing under the nom de course of the Bosario Stable. They are Liborio, Relox, Aquacate, Shy Ann, Sema-nent, Cantores, Dextrose, Hoke, Winnipeg and Luciana. He has been freshening his band up and only a few have" started thus H IT. Dougherty lias a useful stable com-posed of Topango, Glenn, Prospector, Zorro, Adventuress, Tom Norris, Dewitt and Lot-tie Loraine. Trainer W. it. Padgett has these in charge. The Neal family of horsemen is well rep-resented here. II. Neal owns Glabella and Sister Susie; Lenora P. races for F. Neal, while Ethel IT. runs in the interests of R. Neal. These are all useful racers. E. E. Major has five horses to carry his silks at Oriental Park. They are John Mor-rill, Lilac Time, Ballynew, Different Eyes and Mack Garner. John Morrill has more than held his own to date in races over a dis-tance of ground. Lilac Time is a recent ac-quisition, he having claimed her from II. Van Ry. The W. A. McKinney stal le here is com-posed of five horses. For himself McKinney is racing Moorfield, Ililloro and Trafalgar, while Erlanger and Lady Delhi were brought down by him for J. B. Rome Respess. Twinkle Bell, another of the McKinney band, died after winning a race here.
