G. A. COCHRANS PURCHASE High-Priced String of Juveniles Are Now at Belmont Park. Carroll 1L Shilling Will Fit Fifteen Two-Year-Olds to Bear the Silks of the New York Sportsman. NEW YOBK, N. Y., Jan. 23. Gifford A. Cochran, the New York sportsman, furnished the big sensation of the Saratoga yearling sales last August when he paid 40,- 000 for six young thoroughbreds that were consigned from Edward F. Simms Xalapa Farm to the market. It was the biggest individual yearling transaction ever recorded, and as plain matter of fact there were some prospective bidders, had the lot gone into the sales ring with the others of the consignment, -rather resented the fact that they had been sold privately. That was on August 16, and the Xalapa sale was to be the same night. Mr. Cochran had made his selections and he made his stupendous offer. The sale was arranged by E. J. Tranter, of the Fasig-Tipton Company, and while there were, forty-six in the original consignment the six that went to Mr. Cochran brought just 2,600 more than the total for the other forty, for they brought 17,400. It is unlikely that the same six that were purchased by Mr. Cochran would have brought 46,000 at auction, but they comprised the pick of the consignment, and Mr. Cochran has not repented of his purchase. These, with the others of the Cochran stable, are at Belmont Park in the care of Carroll IT. Shilling,, the one-time leading jockey of this country, and it would- be hard to find a more impressive band of young thoroughbred than this high-priced string. ANOTHER BIG TRICE. In that 40,000 purchase there were five colts by Negofol, the sire of Hourless, that were put in at 5,000 each, and 5,000 was paid for a son of North Star III. Besides this remarkable string Mr. Cochran also paid the top auction price of the Saratoga sales when he purchased a black son of The Finn and Princess Mary, by Hessian, from the Madden and Moseley consignment, for 1,000. This colt has been christened Flying Ebony. , No sportsman has expended more money in an effort to obtain the best in the market, and Mr. Cochran is entitled to every racing success. He was a good buyer at the Willis iSharpe Kilmer sale at Belmont Park in the spring when he paid 5,000 for Sun Flag and in 1922 he paid IT. P. Whitney 0,000 for Joshawk. He has made many other important purchases, and all the time he has been 1 reding his own at his Mt. Kisco Farm in Nw York. Of course, it is still too early to know much ibout the horses, but if looks would win mccs the Cochran silks would have nothing o worry about in 1924. The horses botti in the juvenile division, as well as the older one, are grand individuals, and as good a judge as Shilling is confident that he has prospective champions in the lot. There are fifteen two-year-olds and nine older horses in Continued on twelfth pase. - s p y t g a a c 1 r v j p j I j j j j : , . . G. A. Goshawk has noti yet arrived from the farm, but he is win-! tering exceedingly well and will join the Shilling lot before long. Jockey Dave Hum has been engaged by, Shilling as first rider for the stable. He is California rider of some experience and can do 105 pounds. The light apprentices Frank Hastings and Arthur Kavanaugh are also under contract. June Grass, in the older division, is the property of Mrs. Shilling and will be raced under her silks.
