SPA SMWJECHASE STAKES Four Fixtures to Be Run During August Meeting at Saratoga, Close for Entries May 5. NEW TOBK. X. Y.. May 1.— This is going to be a banner year for steeplechasing, aa mf-re and better stakes are being opened by the various racing associations, while the supply of goed jumping material is being constantly augmented by sportsmen who re-Kard cross-country sport with increasing fa«or. Some years ago a steeplechase carrying a value of ,000 or more was a rarity, whereas now there are many that run from that figure to ?10.000. The jumping contests at Saratoga Springs have invariably been productive of tine contests, and this year should prove no exception, as secretary Schaum-brrg of the Saratoga Association lias just announced the closing of four tixtures through the field to be decided during the coming meeting at that point in August. Headed by the Saratoga Steeplechase Handicap, with an added value of $" .000, at about two and one-half miles, these events should be well patronized, not only by American owners, but by those from across the Canadian border, where good steeplechasers have been develop* d from the earliest period of racing in the east. In the old days. J. B. Dawes of Montreal with Bose and Charlemagne achieved notable victtrus at the Spa. In a later period T. P. Ihelan with Lion Heart came from the Dominion and gave battle to the best of our cross-country champions. As many good cross-country horses are now in training for the Candian chases, which are always a feature of the meetings at Montreal and Toronto, they will undoubtedly put in an appearance at Saratoga Springs and throw down the gage of battle to the best of our contingent. The other stakes which are due to close Monday. May 5. at the office of the Saratoga Association, 70 West Fortieth street, are the North American Steeplechase Handicap, ,000 added, at about two miles ; the Beverwyek Handicap Steeplechase, with ,000 added, also at about two miles, and the Shillelah Handicap Steeplechase, ,000 added, which will be run over the same popular route as the Beverwyek and North American. The course at Saratoga is one of the best in the country comparable with that at Belmont Bark and Toronto, both of which have been kept up to the standard. . 1 *. , — „__
