Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of May 2, 1904 Racing at Jamaica, Worth, Kansas City, Louisville, Dtlmar and Union Parks at St. Louis. Colonel W. E. Applegate, to whom the La-| tonia race track was awarded by a recent de-, cision of the Covington Circuit Court and which case is now pending before the State Court of i Appeals, vraa in Cincinnati recently en route from Portland, Ore., to Louisville. Colonel I Applegate feels confident that the upper will sustain the lower court in th? Latonia case and that he will eventually come into possession ; of Latonia. "There is no way that a man can lose his property rights," said Colonel Ap- |legate, "and for this reason I have always ; felt confident about the Latonia case." "If the decision Ls sustained and you come into possession of the track, will you operate it or sell it?" "Why, I shall sell it, I guess. I dont think I will have any trouble doing it either. I have reasons for believing that there are quite a number of gentlemen hereabout willing to invest their money in Latonia. It was always a i paying proposition until we had three tracks operating here and then, of course, the people were raced to death, so to speak. With one , track in operation this is one of the best racing ■ points in the West. Of course, a great many j improvements can be made at Latonia, but that will all come in due time." The famous Highball was an arrival at Morris Park, which opens May 5. Highball is not at his best and it is doubtful if the beating he received at the hands of Fuller in the first race on Jamaicas opening day, the first tim* he started this year and which was regarded as very bad judgment by those who witnessed it, has done him any good. Perhaps it was not j Fullers fault. He may have b?en obeying instructions, but somebody made a mistake. Highball is getting more and more like a typical Ben Strome and there are some experts who declare that he will not be able to carry his : speed. Aceful will be brought to Westchester j tomorrow and on Tuesday wiil b? given a trial which will decide as to whether or not he will start in the Metropolitan.
