DERBY CANDIDATES SIRES • Ballot and Whisk Broom II., Represented by Nine Each. 4 San Briar Ha* Worthy Standard Bearers — IIS Colts, 21 Uridines and 13 Fillies Named. T.OriSVTLDE. Ky., May 1.— Ballot and Whisk Broom II. share the distinction of having the largest number of their progeny In the list of lf 2 three-year-olds named for the forthcoming Kentucky Derby. Each stallion has nine representatives in the list. Then come Sir Martin. Omar Khayyam and Sun Briar, each with six. and Cudgel, which is represented by five of his progeny. Thoae with four representatives are North Star III.. Broomsticlc Iltimus and Black Toney. Those with three are Fair Flay. Friar Rock High Time and Light Brigade. There are seventy-six stallions represented in the list, and in this number there are no less than thirty-two imported from Europe. The Ballot representation includes Mr. Mutt, Ballot Brush, Chilhowee, Spellbinder. Cassius. Diogenes, Stanwix. Fabian and Pretty Politician, and in quality as regards two-year-old form, is superior to the representation of Whisk Broom II.. which embraces such ont ■ as Spic and Span. Dazzler. Husky. Whiskalong. Klondyke. Pickpocket, Handsome. Swingalong and Initiate. Sir Martins list includes the speedy Happy Thoughts and Gypsy King. Thorndale. Mah Jong. Bcvenue Agent and Lord Martin. Comic Artist is undoubtedly the best of the Omar Khayyam lot. The other five comprise Aga Khan, Sun Spot, The Vintner, Polo Ground and Abu Ben Adhem. Sun Briar has worthy representation In Sun Flag. Suns|»ero. Feysun. Sun Mart. Sari Pal and Sun Audience, while much can be claimed for Cudgels representatives, that Include Fluvanna. Star Cudgel. Senator Nor-ris. Wheatstick and Turnberry. The four sponsored by North Star HI., which includes Bourbon Boy. Baffling. Blotter and Better and Better. Iltimus is represented in the list by Wild Aster. Tree Top. Infinite and Digit. Broomstick, the sire of Meridian and Begret. winners respectively of the Kentucky 1 erby in 1011 and 1915. is represened in this years list of eligibles by Pepp, Gold Bug. Bugby and Transmute. The only Kentucky Derby winners which have representation in this years list are Omar Khayyam, winner of the stake in 1016, and Meridian, which scored in 1911. Meridian has but one representative, this one being The Bunt. The Finn, sire of Zev. last years winner, has Finn Bag and Delectable to represent him in this years list. McGee. sire of Donerail. Derby winner in 191u and Exterminator in 1018, is represented this year by Dingo. Phil McCann and Faenza. Uncle, the sire of a large number of Derby contenders in the past, including Old Bose-bud. Derby winner in 1914, has none of his sons or daughters enumerated in this years list. Neither has Bunnymede, sire of Mor-vich ; Marathon, sire of Behave Yourself; Sea Kinir. sire of Paul Jones, or Star Shoot, the sire of Sir Barton. A further scrutiny of this years list of Derby candidates discloses more ineresting facts. There are 115 colts, 21 geldings and only 13 fillies. Of the latter Happy Tboughts is undoubtedly the best, while the unbeaten Sarazen is easily the peer of the geldings. The list includes eight imported three-year-olds, these being Sunshot. Gay Bonald. Spear-point. Cloister. Corinth, Heir-at-Law, Galician anil Havana Boy. It is noteworthy that although the Kentucky Derby is decided in the western section of the country, that the great majority of the nominations to this years renewal wer- made by horsemen who, for the most part, race in the East; and it is the consensus of opinion that an eastern three-year-old will K" to the post favorite in the big race. In the list ot 152 eligibles only about fifty are owned by horsemen who usually race on the Kentucky or other western tracks. This is two to one in favor of the easterners who, this year, are going to make a stronger bid than ever to capture the rich pr.ze. ♦
