I ! ] | I | j ■ j j j j j | ! | | ; CAPTAIN HAL IMPRESSES * Gallops Mile in 1:43% at Downs in Easy Fashion. • Annihilator and Abstract Also Show Up Well — Lon Johnson to Ship to Lexington Track. ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 7. -Captain Hal. the handsome son of Black Toney — Wavering, which is scheduled to start in the forthcoming Kentucky Derby in the colors of A. A. Kaiser of Louisville, gave another fine exhibition of his advanced training for the rich fixture when he galloped a mile in the good time of 1 :io*i at Churchill Downs this morning. Captain Hal began from the stand and running like a piece of well oiled machinery, covered the various stages of the distance with almost clocklike precision. He ran along so easily that it appeared he was hardly running at all. The following fractions tell the tale: :25, :50%, 1:17, 1:4:!%. Jockey J. Heupel, who has been engaged to pilot the colt in his Derby engagement, was on hand but did not have the mount in Tuesdays gallop. However, according to arrangement, he will be in the saddle in all of the colts future trials. Annihilator and Abstract, Anderson and Kendles pair of Derby hopes, which are now betas trained by C. C. Van Meter, were asked by that trainer to go their first mile at a good pace, and they accomplished their tasks in clever fashion, covering the distance in 1 :45y5. Edward Cebrians Derby eligible Baalbec was asked to give an exhibition of his speed when trainer George Brooks called upon him to go three-eighths. At Douglas Park Reputation was sent a half in :53% and Mark Master a similar distance in :53*5. Bankrupt galloped three-eighths in :3S. Boon Companion, a recent arrival from the South, was galloped several times around the course. Lon Johnson has arranged to ship Elsass, Dandybrush. Gorget atid Henry Fox, the latter • two-year-old, to Lexington April 17. I ! Elsass will "probably start in both the Camden | Handicap and Biue Grass Stakes. Henry Fox is an intended starter in the Tobacco I Stake:;. j Al Woodman, trainer of Boon Companion, received a telegram from jockey E. Ambrose, j in which the latter accepted Woodmans terms to rids the colt in his Derby engagement. Trainer Spence has let up on the training Of the two-year-old Barstola. a filly by Sir Barton — Stola. and will send her to Hamburg .Place to be turned out. The five-year-old Canadian-bred Hallucination, regarded the star of the J. K. L. Boss establishment at the Downs, worked three-quarters in 1 : IS. going each eighth in I exactly the same time.
