PILGRIM IS DISQUALIFIED ♦ Set Back After Finishing First in Third Race at Belmont. ♦ Jockey Barnes Held to Blame and Suspended — Gold Stick Winner of Best Offering of Day. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 4.— There was no feature on the program for the Thursday racing, but the sport was interesting", and while the weather was uncomfortably warm, there was a bit of breeze in the! shade that made it an enjoyable afternoon for a goodly crowd. There was a disqualification, which came out of the running of the third race, in which Selby Rurchs Pilgrim, after finishing first, was set back for crossing Ora in the stretch, while the rider, B, Barnes, was suspended for I four days. There had been no claim of foul lodged, but the stewards took the action on , their own initiative, as it happened in the j stretch run. Barnes admitted swerving with his mount, but blamed it on the horse, but this did not excuse him In the minds of the. stewards. The best offering of the day was the mile of the Fair Play, an overnight race for three-year-olds, in which Archibald Barklies Gold Stick was winner from William Ziegler, Jr.*« Needle Gun, with the Sanford Stud Far.i Stables silks third on Tusculum. There w.ts a short delay at the post, for which Flagship was chiefly to blame, but the start was a good cne. Johnny Callahan rushed Gold Stick through on the Inside in the early racing, and once he was in command he never surrendered the lead. Needle Gun and Fast Mail, well lapped, followed him, while Tusculi in was outfooting the others. Fast Mall was first to tire and he dropped back after turning for home. There Needle Gun was undr a hard drive in an effort to catch the Barkiie colt, and Sande was hard at work on Tusculum. But Gold Stick had plenty left t show the way to the end of the journey. There came a disqualification out of the i running of the third race when Selby Burchs : Pilgrim, after beating home Dream of the Valley and Caligula. By the disqualification j the purse was awarded to Dream of the Val- I ley, Caligula taking second place and C. R. ! Fleischmanns Satellite third. Moonyeen was ! not ready when the barrier rose, but the others were in good alignment and Fa tor at once took Caligula into command. Both Dream of the Valley and Pilgrim were far from the pace all through the early running and until well into the stretch Caligula looked a winner. An eighth from home he was still showing the way, but I ream of the Valley was coming with a great rush on the inside, while Pilgrim was racing around the outside and making tip ground rapidly. Both of these caught the leader inside the last Continued on twentieth rase PILGRIM IS DISQUALIFIED Continued from firit pate. eighth and. as he forged to the front, Pilgrim swerved over and mterferred with Dream of the Valley. For that he was disqualified and at the same time the stewards suspended F. Barnes, his rider. Sweet Tnver. racing for A. Roiacono, was winner of the opening five-eighths dash for juveniles of the plater variety. Walter J. Salmons Wormwold raced to second place and third was the portion of Bombshell. Through the early running It was Bombshell th.nt was showing the way, but Sweet Tnver was close at hand and. before the stands were reached, she had taken command easily. Wormwold met with some interference and he finished with excellent courage to take second place and Happy Birthday was also going well at the end to finish fourth. After Sans Peche had been withdrawn from the steeplechase of the day, it was no trick for Joseph E. Wideners Rizard to he an easy winner, with the Rrookmeade Stables Martin Sue second and J. A. Ma-combers Blue and Red third. Martin Sue went Into an early lead as Dolly Bvers choked Rizard back, but when the Widener jumper made a had landing. Byers allowed him to better his pace with the result that he soon went into a long lead and he won the remainder of the way, with plenty to spare. Blue and Red made a sensational bid leaving the back stretch, hut he bore out and his run did not last long. Martin Sue jumped badly at some of his fences when hurried by Mergler. but he settled down nicely before the finish and readily held Rlue and Red safe. For the first time at the meeting the two-year-olds were asked to race around the turns in the five and a half furlongs of the fifth, a dash for maidens. This brought a great finish, in which the Flamingo Farrr? Silken Mane just heat home the Rancocas Stables Krio and the Oreentree Stables Nurmi was a close third, with John Maddens Rittle Asbestos last of the six that raced. It was Commissioner Cahill that was first to be under way. but Nurmi was close after him and Silken Mane and War Bord were right there. War Lord was on the outside of the leaders and shortly after the turn out of th- back stretch he was badly bumped and knocked hack. Rittle Asbestos was slow leaving the barrier and raced greenly through the early stages. In the stretch Commissioner Cahill tired badly and when there was a general closing up back of him, Eric showed in front for a few strides. It was then that Silken Mane made his winning run, but Eric was only beaten by a nose and Nurmi was just a half lencth further away.
