i : j I ! ! GOLDEN RULE TRIUMPHANT • Carries J. K. L. Ross Colors Successfully in Thorncliffe Feature. i Intense Heat Results In Itednred Attendance — FornoTo Jfoses Out Gunslght In the Last Stride. I TORONTO, ONT., June 4. — Extreme heat prevailed for the fourth days racing at Thorncliffe Fark, but a slight breeze from the south made conditions quite bearable. There was an appreciable falling off in the crowd, but it was well up to an off-day mark, about five thousand being on hand when the horses paraded for the first race. Last nights downpour did not make the track as muddy as one might expect; in fact, it could almost be classed as good. At all the turns the going was real heavy, but the front and back stretches had dried out j remarkably well. For the patrons it was quite dry under foot, not a wet spot making its appearance around the course. The best race of the day was the Simcoe ] Purse at three-quarters, in which Golden Rule, carrying the colors of J. K. L. Ross, scored a hollow victory over Lieutenant II., while Sombre was an easy third. Golden Rule proved the shortest priced winner of the meeting, paying only .70 for a ticket. Lieutenant II. held Golden Rule to a half length lead for a half mile, but from there on the son of Wrack just went on to win as his rider pleased. Sombre was just as easily third in front of Black Hackle. W. F. Poisons Pablo, ridden by Claver, proved to be an easy winner in the opening race of the day with Kinsman second and the favorite Arendal third. The winner set snugly in behind the pace of Arendal and Rengalese till the stretch and, when Claver called on him, he swerved quickly to the front and was the handiest kind of winner, having a margin of three lengths at the finish. Kinsman was shuffled back at the half way mark and came on again, but had not enough left to get near the winner in the stretch, although he overhauled Arendal easily. Venizelos won the second race of the day from Lieutenant Farrell, with Care Free third. Shaefer moved up with Venizelos and overtook Care Free in the stretch, going on to a two-length victory. Lieutenant Farrell slowly worked his way through the field and caught the tiring Care Free a sixteenth from the finish. Continued on twentieth page. GOLDEN RULE TRIUMPHANT Continued from first pace. Nine two-year-olds answered the bugle for the third on the card at four and a half f.irlongs and Highland Chief proved an easy winner over Julia O. and Martha Boo* Highland Chief quickly assumed a long lead and was never inena.-ed. The real race was between Julia U. and Martha Koos for second place, these two finishing noses apart. W. G. Campbell scored his first victory of the meeting when Shadow Dance was first home in the fourth at five and a half furlongs for Canadian breds. Night Off was tho one to l e second, Bugle Call was third over Kockasta, The best finish of the day came in the sixth at a mile and an eighth, with Fornovo just getting up in the last stride to nose out Gunsight, while Panorel was next in after after setting all the early pace. To conclude the afternoons sport a claiming purse at one mile and an eighth was the offering and the winner turned up in Herby OaftaBj which had a lengths margin over Owaaoo, while Kent L., after following the field to the stretch, got up in time to take tho third portion of the purse.
