j 1 STATE-WIDE REFERENDUM New Clause Attached to Mitchell Racing Bill Expected to Aid in Its Passage. SPRINGFIELD, 111.. June 4.— A state-wide referendum clause was attached to the Mitchell pari-mutuel racing bill late Wednesday night and the bill was advanced to third reading. It was expected to be called for passage late today. r.ackers of the bill say they are confident it will pass in its present form. Governor Small, they say, has given them his assurance that the state-wide referendum feature has made the bill acceptable to him. He objected to the county referendum amendment adopted I - last week. If the bill passes, the proposition of creating a state commission to supervise racing under the pari-mutuel wagering system will be submitted to the people in November, 1927. The amendment was presented by Representative OGrady. This is the bill sponsored by the Illinois Jockey Club, of which Robert W. Sweitzer is president. Others on the committee with Mr. Sweitzer include : J. V. Lanigan, John F. Gilchrist, John T. Connery, John Burke, Harry J. Ridings. John T. McGrath, T. J. Crowe and others. Editors Note.— There had been no word from Springfild relative to a vote on the Mitchell racing bill when Daily Racing Form v. nt to press.
