Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of June 6, 19and5 Racing at Gravesend, Latonia, Hamilton, Ont.; Fair Grounds and Union Park at St. Louis. The New York Pun made this positive announcement : "August Belmont will be reappointed chairman of the State Racing Commission. Governor Hipgns will appoint as the other members of the commission Congressman James Wadsworth and E. D. Morgan." Frisco Gardner came to Chicago from Kansas City Sunday. He had intended shipping to Latonia, but when he heard that there might be racing at Inga.ls Park he deferred shipment. If after a day or two has no assurance of a meeting at Joliet, he will go to the Cincinnati track. Todays Gravesend program contained an almost unequaled array of turf celebrities. Tradition saved the day for the East in the Gazelle Stakes. George C. Bennett was beaten but not disgraced. Irish Lad, in his first appearance since his memorable breakdown in the Brighton Handicap last year, met ignominious defeat in the sprint handicap, in which he wa3 opposed by such as Broomstick, Hamburg Belle, Toscan and others. A western horse. Shot Gun, won the race. Hamburg Belle was second and Race King third. Gearge C. Bennett was beaten in the two-year-old handicap by Phidias, the latter carrying 114 pounds to the Cookstars 126. In the final race Cederstrome beat Von Tromp by a length and a half.
