The track had dried completely out and was on the fast side, while the fields were not as bulky as on other days. The problem of locating a winner was harder to solve than when the fields were larger. The quality was a trifle better than on the first few days. The richest offering of the day was the Broadview Handicap, which was ,500 and was exclusively for horses foaled in Canada. However, the best field of the day paraded in the St. Clair Purse, an allowance race for three-year-olds and over at one mile and seventy yards and of the seven starters all were well fancied. Royal Visitor was backed to the exclusion of almost all else in the race for the Canadian foaled at three-quarters, fifth on the card, and Hearts of Oak gelding was the easiest kind of winner over Seven Oaks and Puff Ball. Royal Visitor was the shortest priced winner of the meeting, .65 being the total proceeds of a ticket The race was marred by an accident when El Canoes saddle slipped at the quarter post and H. Church tossed under the fence. El Canoe ran straight across the track and through the fence, where the horses go on the track from the paddock. Church was unhurt, be-: ing just shaken up. Flying Cloud, at odds-on, accounted for the St. Clair Purse, leading home by four lengths, Commissioner, Coeur de Lion and four others. The winner was saved to the last turn and then drew clear to score in easy fashion. Twelve answered the call in the first race. a claiming purse for maidens at three-quarters and Mintstick finally delivered, with Postman a strong second and Timeless third. Crinkle went to the front quickly, but quit at the stretch turn, relinquishing the lead to Timeless, which in turn fell before the Hop-I kins gray racer, which had worked his way up slowly through the field. Postman came with a rush through the stretch and caught Timeless tiring and outlasted him at the end.
