i c , " LOUISVILLE TURF NOTES LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 16. The outstanding Derby gallop of the day was witnessed at Churchill Downs when trainer Al Steele sent the Keeneland Studs pair, Champ De Mars and Mike McRuke, out for a mile, the pair *covering the distance in 1 :45, the fastest mile of the spring season. Champ De Mars led his stablemate for the entire distance. He was caught in :24%. :50, 1 :17, 1 :45. Both colts pulled up sound. E. B. McLeans Derby nominee. Prince of Wales, was given his first work since his arrival from the East. Accompanied by The Engineer, a stablemate, the Derby colt rattled off a half in :49%, and five-eighths in 1:04%. Roycrofter, the Croissant stables main reliance for the Derby, was allowed to gallop a half mile in :51%. Tamale Dick went out with Rertram W. and worked three-quarters in 1:21%, going the quarter in :25%, one-half in :52, and five-eighths in 1 :06%. At Douglas Park, Take a Chance and Malcolm R. Jr. hooked up for a gallop at three-eighths. Take a Chance was in the lead all the way and finished out the distance in the fast time of :36%. The fastest work of any horses in training here this spring was recorded by Captain Hal, which displayed fine speed by going three-quarters in 1 :15%. He could have shaded this time but for being eased up in the last eighth. He ran the quarter in :23, three-eighths in :34%, half in :47%, and five-eighths in 1 :00%. Kentucky Cardinal, a recent arrival from Tijuana, went a half in :51%, and five-eighths in 1 :06%. Hast, Socialist, Federal. Fair Wind and Paavo, from J. E. Wideners stable, went out together and galloped five-eighths in 1 :0S%. The half was covered in :53%.
