HUNTINGTON, W. Va., April 16.— A series claiming races made up an off-day card the Fair Grounds this afternoon, but the racing was spirited and the majority of the winners scored only by narrow margins. Favorable conditions once more prevailed a fairly good crowd witnessed the sport. Approaching the finish of the third the first four horses were racing almost in perfect alignment. In a thrilling finish Col. Pat, pacemaker, barely lasted to win. Helen Major in turn barely saved second place from Noko, which finished going fastest of in third position. St. Augustine and Collie Tokalon contested the leadership, racing as a team to the stretch in the initial dash. When straightened out St. Augustine proved the gamer and Ho-Hurry headed the tiring Collie Tokalon the last few strides for second place. It was only after a hard drive that Little Jennie succeeded in earning a close decision from Gilmore in the second dash after the latter had been forced to race wide all through the stretch. Miss Ida Brown barely lasted to save third. Hoover and Josie M. contested the leadership closely all the way in the fourth and the former got home by a short margin. After beginning slowly Shamrock Flower came from far back to beat the others home. After showing the way throughout Air Mail was the easiest winner of the day in the fifth. Melvina saved ground entering the stretch, which enabled her to beat Thomas Piatt by a narrow margin for the second honors. Taking command shortly after the start. Sandy H. was closely pressed during the early stages of the sixth race. After rounding the far turn Sandy H. drew clear and eventually won handily. New Rival and American Soldier divided the remainder of the purse.
