STAR IN THE EMBRYO * Club Steak Makes Auspicious Debut at Havre. ♦ Winner of Two-Year-Old Race by Ten Lengths and Fast Time — Beverwyck Purse to Apostle. • HAVRE DE GRACE, Mil., April 16. - What was meant as- the feature race of the Harford Association this afternoon was something of a fizzle, but a two-year-old filly saved th day. The feature was the Beverwyck Purse, and the filly to make the racing worth while-was Club Steak, a swift running daughter of Meridian and Stake and Cap, that races for J. P. Jones. It was only a half-mile dash for maiden fillies that fell to Club Steak but no juvenile, of the year has won more impressively. She simply galloped out into a long lead and was winner by ten lengths in the fast time of The Beverwyck Purse was a five and a half furlongs race and it was won by Apootle from the stable of C. Caffarelli. The race was for three-year-olds and there were some good ones back of Apostle but the race was a slowly run one and some of the riders back of the winner did not appear to be making really serious efforts to be beat him home. SLOWLY RUN CONTEST. Eleven went to the post in the Heverw.vck and Apostle was a bad actor at the barrier. He had the inside position and Milton had to spring the gate when he was slightly back of his company, but he was in motion and h* shot through on the inside to go into a long lead. Early in action, Grestes II. was in second place, but Froggatte was Tiding as though in a mile and a quarter journey instead of a five and a half furlongs dash. He made absolutely no effort to send the imported colt to Apostle and still the pace was slow. Sport Royal was another that appeared to be under a slight restraint, though there was an excuse for he was not in a good position. With no one to challenge. Apostle held to his lead throughout and he still had something to spare at the end. McAtee saved ground with Welshot at the head of the stretch and he was along in time to be second and the weakly ridden Orestes II. was third in spite of Froggatte. This race cannot be taken seriously for some of those back of Apostle and his score did not add anything to his reputation. Fifteen maiden two-year-old fillies made up the field for the opening race, a half mile dash, and it uncovered a smart miss in Club Steak. This one is a daughter of Meridian and Stake and Cap that races for J. P. Jones, and she simply toyed with her company to be home the winner by ten lengths. There was an accident at the start when Royal Alms, the A. C. Bostwick starter-, stumbled and unseated K Simon, her rider. Fortunately both filly and rider escaped injury. RUNS AWAY FKO.M RIVALS. The start was a good one, but Club Steak was so much the nest that alm#ost instantly she rushed into the lead and she continued to widen her lead right to the finish to win with ridiculous ease. Pyrex, the H. I. Whitney starter, worked her way through resolutely to finish in second place, beating Lena Rinehart, another daughter of Meridian, for the place by a narrow margin, and Fresco, another of the If. I*. Whitney starters, was a fast finishing fourth. J. K.. L. Ross Samara showed a bit of speed in the running and she was in second place until the turn for home, where she tired badly and when she was thoroughly beaten she was eased up by Reggie Fisher, who had the mount. Club Steak impressed greatly in this race, her first start, and it is entirely possible that she is one of the truly first class fillies of the year. She is in the big field for the 0,000 Aberdeen, to be run tomorrow, when she will be called on to meet both colts and fillies. The second offering brought out a fairly good band and it was won rather easily by I.eatherwood when he scored with plenty to spare from Carlton, while Miss Kosedale, finishing with good courage, was just up to take third from Wellfinder. YVellfinder was the one to cut out all the running, while Leather-wood was rather badly pocketed in the early racing and met with a goodly share of interference. Carlton raced forwardly next to the rail and until well into the stretch then-did not seem to be a chance for I.eatherwood to come through. Finally the opportunity offered and once he had clear sailing he drew away from his company readily. While pulling up Wellfinder after the finish the horse stumbled and I.eyland was unseated, but be fortunately escaped injury. Mrs. A. R. Alexandras Care Pro* will not be permitted to start again at the Havre do Grace meeting. He earned this sentence when he absolutely refused to extend himself in the third race. The old fellow had MOM OMtlMOl "" HsMMH p:ige w STAR IN THE EMBRYO i c Continued from first pace time ago established something of a reputa- , tion for reliability, but this race was a return to his worst manners when he sulked " from the rise of the barrier and was many lengths back of his company all the way. The stewards lost no time in barring his entry for the remainder of the meeting. This contest fell to Mabel C. and it marked a second victory of the afternoon for W. Mutiden for he had ridden Leatherwood to his score in the preceding race. In this Mabel . had all the speed and, forcing the pace " throughout, she still had plenty to spare at ] the end. Panola, after being particularly sluggish tl In the early race, came with a great rush at the end to nose out Rest Shot for second 3 place. Rest Shot had raced forwardly all the way and it was only in the last strides J that she lost that place. There was a close finish came out of the mile and seventy yards of the fifth race when True Roy. from the Sagamore Stable, S under a particularly good ride by Frank , Coltilletti, was just up to beat the Flamingo Farm Stables Exchequt r with Rarney Wells landing in third place ahead of Harry CarraO, Maiben rushed Fxehequcr out to set the pace and it was only in the last stride that he was beaten. The others raced fairly well bunched back of Exchequer, with Rarney Wells bringing up the rear. Roth Hspanol and Plain Dealer lost some ground on the first turn and again leaving the back stretch Hapaael bate out rather badly. Coltilletti timed his run to a nicety and he came with a great rush on the outside to h- winner in the hist stride, while Rarney % W.lls ■tofc through on the inside to take , third. F. M. Kelley lost Plata Healer out of t the running when he was claimed by H. G. R. dwell for $.000. t . . Smilhsons Roxana proved best of the 1 •heap ones that met in the mile and three- r sixteenths of the sixth race and she was an a easy winner when she led home Ranoil, with I Cray Cables the one to be third. i
