May 4. Bhinoek. the Parkview Stables Derby candidate, set the mark for the I erby trials of the present training season when he negotiated the fastest mile made by any candidate for the big race. Fred Cood secured the services of jockey Tommy Murray, of the Audley Farm Stable, to work the colt this morning and Uhinock ran the mile in 1:41%. Murrays instructions were to go to the three-quarters post in 1 lit and he hit the mark to the dot. The fractional time was :12. :24. :49%, 1:02, 1:15, 1:29, 1:41%. 1:56 and 2:11% for the mile and one-quarter. Bhinock worked alone and showed speed at all stages of the journey. Murray had a good hold of him all the way and eased him at the mile and, after passing the mile and one-eighth, the colt was eased to a canter in the final eighth. The track was fast but dead and cuppy and trainers of other horses at the Downs, who witnessed the exhibition, were loud in their praise of the manner in which the colt accomplished his task. Bhinock pulled up in good condition and never took a long breath. He appeared as if he had just taken a slow gallop as he walked around the barn cooling out after the trial. .f. W. Healys Derby candidate. Tamale Dick, which is undergoing his preparation for the race under the care of Don Jones, ran a mile in 1:44% according to Jones. His fractional time was :24%, :49% and 1:10% for the first three-quarters. Ceo. Covington, brother of "Butch" Covington, who rode MacBeth IT. to victory in the Kentucky Derby in 1888 for the Chicago firm of J. V. Hankins and Johnny Campbell, was a visitor at the Downs and witnessed Iihinocks trial. This is the first time he has been on a race track in twenty years. Trainer Prank Hector took over the horses that Bon Jones has been training all winter for the racing firm of Pat Knebelkamp, C. A. Henslee and Dan Borden. They are Two Pence, Betty B., Sieg Margon and Bed C range. Mr. Knebelkamp has a likely apprentice rider under contract to his stable who is a native of New Orleans. The lad will ride at M pounds the coming season. John B. McKee received word that Mr. Norman Church, president of the Klgin Watch Company, would arrive here the first of next week with a party of friends and stay until after the running of the Derby Mr. Church owns Flagstaff, the brother to Flags, which trainer "Big Bill" Knapp is handling for him. _ _ »
