LARGE HOLIDAY GATHERING Kinds Birthday Celebration Brings Out Big Crowd to Thorncliffe Kings Court Falls In Principal Feature Landlord Keats Jo pagan l y a Head HeadIn In Driving Finish TORONTO OnL June 3 The Kings birth ¬ day drew out a large holiday gathering to the Thorncliffe course this afternoon There were two handicaps on the card the Cecil Handicap at threequarters and the Kings Birthday Handicap at a one mile Another attraction was a race for twoyearolds which brought out a field of good youngsters This race was run as the fourth and it fur ¬ nished a rousing finish in which Com J K L Ross Landlord beat Jopagan by a head Bloomtip and Landlord alternated in making the pace for the first threeeighths and rounding the turn into the home stretch was not beaten however and when Walls sat down and began driving the Ross colt answered in game fashion At the end he caught Jopagan tiring and he nailed him in the last few strides The winner ran the fiveeighths in 100 a new track record for the distance The disappointment of the race was the miserable showing made by Up setta The filly dropped out of it immedi ¬ ately the start came and was far back most of the way waySport Sport Royal was withdrawn from the Cecil Handicap leaving five to go The Sea ¬ gram Stable furnished tlfe favorite in Digit but the best he could do was to land in third place The winner was Lieutenant II He was ridden by F Smith followed the pace ¬ makers until rounding the far turn where he moved up with a rush on the outside and in the final drive wore Robert Maxwell down to beat the latter by a half length Digit was third another length away The latter began slowly and was used up getting to the pacemaker the fiist furlong furlongWATERLOO WATERLOO TOK SEAGRAMS SEAGRAMSSome Some one must have placed a hoodoo on the Seagram Stable The Waterloo turfman furnishing another beaten favorite when Kings Court failed to make good in the after ¬ noons feature the Kings Birthday Handi ¬ cap King3 Court was heavily supported the followers of the stable simply dumped the money in the machines in an attempt to even up their losses on Upsetta and Digit The best Kings Court could do was to finish third The winner turned up in Jean Crest which scored a runaway victory Abel rushed to the front in the run to the turn and in the back stretch drew away into a fourth lengths lead At no stage did the result appear in doubt and at the finish Jean Crest had a lead of a length and a half over Forecast II which came from behind and finished with a rush Kings Court raced in second place to the eighth post when he began to tire and he was driving hard at the end to beat Tricky Take Off half a length for third place placeThe The conditions of the first race called for horses to be ridden by maiden jockeys It brought out a field of twelve and Cave Wom ¬ an with H Miller up was made favorite She made good in handsome fashion when she came from behind in the stretch and in a driving finish beat Play On by a head In the early running Glimmering went to the front and showed the way to the head oC the stretch where Play On moved up and passed her At this stage Isobel C which was right close to the pace bolted to the outside fence and young Townron who had the mount lost one of his stirrup irons This put the mare out of the struggle The finish was a rous ¬ ing one between Cave Woman and Play On and the former proved the gamer and got up in the last few strides McKenna was third beaten a length for second place and then came Mabel K another length away Best I Shot off slowly was never prominent prominentFIRST FIRST FOR J W DAYTOX DAYTOXThe The J W Dayton stable registered its first winner of the meeting when Sea Lady beat a band of maidens in the second race She was ridden by Bourassa and after following the leaders until entering the home stretch moved up with a rush and easily disposed of his opponents in the final eighth and drew away into a long lead She had a three lengths advantage over Senate at the end Senate showed a good performance but Mun den made the mistake of making a bit too much of his mount racing the speedy Ace of Aces II off his feet the first five furlongs This cooked him and when the winner challenged in the stretch run Senate was a tiring horse Merry Minstrel just managed to last long enough to beat Type cutter by a nose for third money The latter raced wide all of the way or he would have been a dangerous factor factorTimeless Timeless made a runaway of the third race a dash of a mile and a sixteenth for which Virginius was a well backed favorite Begin ¬ ning fast Timeless outran his rivals to the first turn and on the back stretch drew away into a commanding lead He was in hand until the last eighth where Abel was forced to shake him up to stall off Just The latter gained steadily from a slow be ¬ ginning but entering the stretch made a wide turn At the end she wore down the I tiring Rhinestone to beat the latter by half a length for second place Virginius the favorite was never a factor at any stage
