GREEN WOODS VICTOR Outgames Caroline in Stubbornly StubbornlyContested Contested Finish Reds Victory in Colors of Veteran VeteranThomas Thomas Cheek Most Popular Popularof of Meeting AURORA 111 June 3 In the absence of any special carded feature interest centered in the running of the sixth race which at ¬ tracted the best field at Exposition Park this afternoon The Sanola Stock Farm provided the winner in Green Woods which ruled favorite and her victory was a popular one It was only after keen urging in the closing stages however that the daughter of Honeywood Rock Green succeeded in overhauling Caroline At the end she was doing her best to win by a half length from the Golden State Stable filly Caroline dis ¬ placed Green Woods from the lead while rounding the turn for home and appeared the winner an eighth out Green Woods had still something in reserve and closing true I and gamely got up in the last few yards After racing prominently in the early stages Liberty came again in the last sixteenth and outstayed Columbia II for third place Columbia II commenced slowly gradually worked her way up into a contending posi ¬ j tion by the time the stretch was reached but the effort told on her when the real test came cameFAYORAIUE FAYORAIUE RACIXG CONDITIONS CONDITIONSMost Most favorable conditions prevailed and an excellent midweek day crowd was in attendance attendanceProbably Probably the most popular victory during the meeting was that scored by Red in the fourth race for the veteran turfman Thomas Cheek who celebrated his hundredth birth day Thursday on July 25 1925 Red raced in close pursuit of Intake to the final eighth then finished courageously and disposed of the tiring pacemaker with ease during tho last sixteenth Melvina was an easy third as Thomas Piatt dropped out of serious con ¬ tention after going the first quarter Following quarterFollowing the running of the race Mr Cheek posed with his horse for the camera men He also was caught in the act of con ¬ gratulating jockey Allen who piloted his horse to victory The grand old man was most liberally applauded applaudedClosing Closing with a brilliant rush on the outsido of the leaders during the final test Kdna Mitchell eventually scored a handy victory over the bulky band of twoyearolds in the ifth race Josie Hartman the early leader barely lasted to save second place from Fire water which saved ground during the stretch run Am I Early raced below her best form After going wide in the stretch run she dropped out of contention in the last six teenth teenthKEEN KEEN STRETCH STRUGGLE STRUGGLEOne One of the keenest stretch struggles of the meeting came with the running of the hird race in which the leaders raced closely bunched until midway of the stretch with Mclntosh showing the way by a slight mar gin When the final test came San San moved up strongly on the inside and Missouri Boy challenged working his way up on the out side After knocking at the door for a consider able time Downcast finally graduated from the maiden ranks when he annexed the open ing dash Although he led throughout he was doing his best at the end to stall off Counsellor Connolly which raced in closest closestpursuit pursuit practically throughout Kings Court II led the other home and they were a mediocre band Saving much ground when entering the stretch where Glory the pacemaker ran out enabled Gay Boy II to score an easy victory in the second race This was the first of a series of three races over the Exposition Course and the Padgett repre ¬ sentative established the track record for the distance Glory was much the best of the others My Biddy eventually disposed of Black Top for third during the last six ¬ teenth teenthBrotherly Brotherly Love commenced his run after rounding the far turn and gaining steadily in the stretch ran over the leaders to a handy victory in the closing dash Frank Gailor after racing in the first flight for the entire way was a handy second It was only after a hard drive that Green Hills tho pacemaker lasted to save the short nd of the purse from Stevens which finished going strongly
