GALETIAN IMPRESSIVELY Proves Too Fast for Opponents in the Speed Handicap Heckler and Byrd Score Double Win for II P Whitney Ascetic Joes Down DownWith With Victory in Sight NEW YORK N Y June 3 Galetian the handsome son of Trompe La Morte and I ady Galette that races for G D Widener was returned victorious in the Speed Handicap 1 at Belmont Park today The prize was 1 worth 4200 to the winner and at the end he had only a nose advantage over Mino 1 from the Oak Ridge Stable with Walter J Salmons lightly weighted Powhatan saving third half a length before Harry Payne Whitneys Noah The race was run over the Widener Course and in the teeth of a gale galeAnother Another unseasonable drop in the tempera ¬ ture made it unpleasant on the big course for those who had left topcoats at home but it was a big crowd that was on hand and the sport was worthy Seven races were i provided for the faithful and early in the i action there came a double for the popular Whitney silks when Heckler took the steeple ¬ chase and the twoyearold Byrd followed I in the next race raceTen Ten went to the post for the Speed Han ¬ dicap and while it does not enjoy the im ¬ portance of the Toboggan it brought out a field that made it notable Silver Fox was at the top of the list and required to take up 130 pounds and under that weight he was giving away great lumps to all the other starters With all his weight he was tre ¬ mendously popular before the running but as in the Toboggan he showed a dislike for the straight course and was at no time a L really serious contender contenderNoah Noah as was expected dashed to the front t from the rise of the barrier but Galetian and 1 Mino were not far away and first it was 3 Mino that had the Whitney hope headed As s he disposed of Noah Barnes moved up with i Galetian and the Widener colt was right t with Mino The pair of them were locked all 1 through the last sixteenth and only those 2 right on the line could decide the finish x and Galetian had the decision Powhatan i finished strongly a length and a half away y and then came the tired Noah leading Silver r Fox to the finish finishThis This same Galetian early last year gave e promise of developing into the champion a juvenile of the year and it may have been just as well for the reputation of Pompey Bubbling Over Canter Flight of Time and the rest of them that the son of Trompe La Mort went amiss and was out of the run ¬ ning after the spring campaign Mr Joyner r has brought him back a good horse He did not show much in the Toboggan but his race in the Speed Handicap leaves no doubt of his quality qualityWhen When Pony McAtee rode Byrd to victory in the four and a half furlongs for juveniles which was the second race he chalked up another for the Whitney silks Heckler hav ¬ ing earned a close decision in the steeple ¬ chase This juvenile dash brought together Continued oil twentieth pase GALETIAN IMPRESSIVELY I Continued from first page some highly regarded ones and IJyrd beat them handily and when at the end was showing the way to A J Gadeks Master William with J W Beans Olive Dexter a close third The other starters were Mrs Louise Viaus Florian and Grief racing for thft newly formed T and n Stable StableEarly Early in the action Byrd was just a bit green and McAtee had to rouse him smartly before he took command Once out there he held his company perfectly safe for the rest of the journey Master William finished with good courage and Olive Dexter was also going welL Florian acted badly at the barrier and raced greenly while Grief did not cut much figure figureMaidens Maidens of the plater variety made up the field for the opening dash at threequarters through the Widener Course It resulted in a good finish when Marshall Fields Rubai tina a threeyearold daughter of Omar Khayyam was winner by a narrow margin from K Johnsons Miel and Flying Vixen from the Clovelley Farm Stable saved third Rubaitina beat the others away from the barrier but she was almost at once outrun by Play Tag the Ascot Stable starter Play Tag continued to show the way to the last eighth but he could never draw far away from the filly and In that last eighth he quit so badly that she went into the com ¬ mand Miel finished with excellent courage but Rubaitina was still half a length to the good at the end endOnly Only four started In the short course steeplechase but it furnished a real sur ¬ prise when Joseph E Wideners Ascetic looked upon as a sure winner made a mis ¬ take two jumps from the finish that bounced Dolly Byers from the saddle This left Harry Payne Whitneys Heckler and Lipingo from Thomas Hitchcocks Broad Hollow Stable to fight it out and in a long drive Heckler was the winner The only other starter was Auld Lang Syne from the j Raritan Stable and when he made a mistake at the front field Liverpool and ran out badly was eliminated from the contention contentionJohn John E Maddens Rocky Lane was easily the best of the starters in the fifth race and he was winner from G A Marshalls Agnate with P S P Randolphs Pheasant saving third from the Everglade Stables Delegate It was unusual to see Rocky Lane parading in a race with claiming conditions He drew the inside post position which is a decided handicap at the mile distance unless the horse can come clear Rocky Lane was unable to come clear and was shuffled back But McAuliffe bided his time and when he found a chance took to the outside to make his run He had to pass several horses but came on in the final eighth to win going away awayL L S Strudes Cannae making his first start of the year was winner of the mile of the sixth race and he won by a comfortable margin from C P Winfreys Palmist with P H Faulconers Little Dave just saving third from Mrs K E Hitts Korean Salta and Brush By were the ones to set a fast early pace while Schuttinger was not far away with Cannae and Korean also raced forwardly at the head of the stretch Schut ¬ tinger went around the leaders with Cannao and opening up a good lead he crossed to the inner rail and the race was over as far as the firsfmoney was concerned concernedThe The second maiden race over threequarters of the Widener Course proved easy for Afton from the Oak Ridge Stable Ridden by Johnny Callahan he made a show of his company to win in hand Gladstone raced to second place and third was the portion of High Bridge
