Here and There on the Turf Latonia Meeting Opens Latonia Derby Outlook Suburban Prospects Aurora Plotters Arraigned The Latonia meeting opened yesterday amid the usual enthusiasm The picturesque course in the hills of northern Kentucky across the river from Cincinnati has always been a popular racing ground Latonia has a larger public upon which to draw for patronage than and the attend ¬ any other Kentucky course ance on an average is probably larger than at any other course in the country countryCol Col Matt J Winn and his associates in the Kentucky Jockey Club have built up the popularity of Latonia by steadily improving the quality of the racing The class of horses attracted by minimum purse offerings of 1400 is bound to be good and the public is quick to respond to the attraction of really high class racing racingWhile While Colonel Winn has been expanding his turf activities to include the Fairmount Park course at Collinsville 111 and Lincoln Fields near Chicago he has still found it possible to keep his primary interest in Kentucky racing The racing at Churchill Downs and Latonia has not suffered in the least from the fact that the directing genius of the Kentucky Jockey Club has assumed these additional duties The Latonia Derby is to be decided at the Kentucky course next Saturday This 25000 race at a mile and a half is one of the really important threeyearold fixtures of the year It is over the true Derby distance and con ¬ sequently a true test of stamina Although it has penalties and allowances its winner must be a horse of goal to high class even though he wins under a light impost impostThis This years race promised to be more or less of a walkover for E R Bradley s Ken ¬ tucky Derby winner Bubbling Over but now that he is definiately out of the race it be ¬ comes a rather open affair The Idle Hour Farm colors will be well represented with Bagenbaggage and Boot to Boot in the field but owners of other eligibles will not be frightened out by these colts good as they are as they might have been if the Bradley ace had been in condition to face the barrier This should make the contest more interesting so fir as contention is concerned although the popularity of Bubbling Over would have made the race a greater drawing card than it can possiblj be without him himEascnbaggages Eascnbaggages real ability as a racer will be thoroughly tested in this race The Louisi ¬ ana Derby winner ran a remarkable race in the Churchill Downs feature to finish second to liis illustrious stablemate but in this con ¬ test he will have to maintain his speed for an additional quarter of a mile and he will have no dazzling fastrunning partner to run tha early pacemakers into exhaustion If he wins the Latonia Derby Bagenbaggage will assume an even higher place among the threeyearolds than he at present occupies While the Latonia Derby is being decided in the Middle West the East will also have its racing thrill in the renewal of the famous Su burban Handicap at Belmont Park Saturday This event first run in 1884 has always been a favorite with metropolitan racegoers and the 1926 race promises to be among the most interesting in its long history historySarazens Sarazens decisive victory in the Metropoli ¬ tan Handicap Monday makes him appear a for ¬ midable candidate for the Suburban but he will have worthy opposition for first honors Silver Fox may or may not be able to main ¬ tain his speed for a mile and a quarter The Suburban will go far toward settling this ques ¬ tion American Flag has been a startling dis appointment thus far this year He will have an opportunity to redeem himself in the Su burban burbanChilhowee Chilhowee the recordbreaker of 1924 has shown little since his return to racing but he is also a Suburban Handicap eligible and his admirers are confident he will give Sarazen a battle Spot Cash Cherry Pie and Joy Smoke to mention only a few others are all possible threats against Sarazens apparent su ¬ periority The Vanderbilt geldings reputation for sourness is enough encouragement to train ¬ ers of other eligibles to make them send their charges to the post on the chance that Sarazen will run sourly as he has done so frequently in the past The arraignment of the four conspirators in the Aurora poisoning case is an indication that no effort will be spared to assure adequate punishment for these miscreants Earl Clark the alleged ringleader in the plot is still at large but every effort is being made to ap prehend him It is to be hoped that he will be caught during the ten days before the con ¬ tinuance expires so that all of the plotters can be placed on trial together This scandal is one of the most atrocious in years involving as it does revolting cruelty to animals as well as a gross attempt at fraud Two horses died as the result of the poisoning but fortunately the conspirators were not able to realize any returns on their pernicious activities
