SINGLE FOOT WINS NOTED BROOKLYN HANDICAP * « SCORES BY A NOSE . » Beats Peanuts and Dangerous in Spectacular Finish. • American Flag Fails Again Dismally — Sarazen Another Disappointment. • NEW YORK. N. Y.. June 14. -Single Foot, racing in the best form he has shown all year, was winner of the Brooklyn Handicap under the silks of J. E. Griffith at Aqueduct today. The famous old handicap was the opening feature of the twenty days meeting of the Queens County Jockey Club, and it brought a thrilling finish when the son of Wrack and Virginia L. just beat home Robert L. Gerrys Peanuts, and four lengths further back came Dangerous, the hope of the Rosedale Stable. The mile and an eighth was run in 1:50, and it was worth 111,964 to the winner. As usual, the opening day of the Aqueduct meeting, though it fell on Monday, attracted a big crowd. Fred Behberger ha. I prepared an excellent program, but of course it was the Brooklyn Handicap that was the big thing of the afternoon. Before the running it was generally agreed that American Flag ought to be winner, but he went in the air at the start and almost unseated Johnson. Then, after he was righted, he did not run his race, with the result that he was at all times far from the contention. HOW RACE WAS RUN. Little time was lost at the post, and the barrier was released to a good start, though the action of American Flag handicapped him materially. Peanuts was first to show out of the bunch, but Chilhowee was right with him and Single Foot was not far away. Sarazen began from the inside position, but he left in good order and was fortunate to go through on the inside, and in the first eighth he was showing his lu ad in front Single Foot was right with him and Son of John was close at hand, while Chilhowee was also in the pacemaking division. Weiner was in a bit of a hurry to get Sarazen clear in his rail position and he went through to the lead of a length to prevent any possibility of being shut off. Single Foot held right to him and there was little change in the running positions of the others except that Peanuts had dropped back somewhat, though he was galloping strongly. American Flag had niad up some ground, hut so little that it was apparent he would have to improve his pace materially if he was to cut any figure in the running. Not content with a lead of a length. Weiner added another half length to his bad. Still Single Foot held to second position and little Peanuts was beginning to make his move. An eighth out Peanuts came with a mighty rush that carried him by Single Foot and then he had Sarazen whipped, but Single Foot was coming again and in a desperately fought finish little Peanuts just could not stand that second charge, losing by a nose. SARAZEN QUITS BADLY. Sarazen quit badly after his term of pace-making but his was a remarkable race. Single Foot has improved wonderfully and he had a decided pull in the weights. Pea-| nuts probably needed the race. There will be excuses offered for American Flag but admitting his misfortune at the start it was not enough to excuse his showing. The Iog Cabin Stables colors finished first and second in the inaugural race of the Aqueduct meeting when Chance Play and Sir Stuart led home Cinema of the Samuel Boss stable. The victorious pair ruled an overwhelming favorite and made good accordingly. It was Cinema that set the pace. with Chance Play racing under restraint When called on the son of Fair Flay quickly dashed to the front and was soon clear of his company. Sir Stuart, after losing much ground on the stretch turn, came with great speed to overtake the pacemaker and finish in second place. A steeplechase under selling conditions was the second offering of the day and there was a decided surprise over tin- result wtien Amstello. at long odds, was h mie the winner. It looked all over like Conniebert until the final drive, as the Greentrve Stable jumper had showed the way the greater part of the distance. He tired, however, after taking the last jump and was no match for Amstellos closing challenge The winner was always doee up and responding gamely to hard rid ing scored an unexpected triumph. There were several mishaps when I.ritannio lost his rider at the fifteenth jump, while Voa Iopuli II. and Myndon Mount were pulled up at the thirteenth. There was another surprise here when the well-thought of Black Pepper could do no better than finish third to Pop Bell and Policeman Day. The race was virtually a duel between the latter pair with first one in front and then the other. The result was in doubt until the final strides when Pop Bell outgamed the Greentree representative but only after the hardest kind of a drive. * .
