Dick Welles* Selections At Aurora SMOOTH ICE— POP SHOT— TENDER SETH. The recent storms played havoc with the racing strip here, and even the new drainage system proved unequal to the task of carrying off the great volumes of water which fell. As a consequence, the course-resembles a quagmire, and only those horses of known mud running ability will have much of a chance in negotiating the slippery going. The opener brings together a bad lot and. with the uncertain footing, the winner is apt to turn up from most any souro. SMOOTH ICE has performed well in the mud at times and, on that score alone, is our selection here. POP SHOT won a race in the slop at Omaha last fall and may he good enough to get the place today. TENDER BETH is more- suited to a distance but is given the call for the show on his ability to plow through the going. DEADFALL-ROB ROY— PAILEDDA. Generally speaking, its a bad lot that are to contest for the second numlier, and very likely one of the long shots of the day will surprise here. DEADFALL has showed nothing in his races here, but he was good enough at Akron to win a purse on a track deep in mud. With the same conditions prevailing today, he may turn up the winner. HOP. ROY did not find the going too much for him in his last out when he finished second to Tnvictus. The same effort here would likely gain him the place again. PAUUEDDA is still a maiden, but Be performed quite well at Rai-eland last year, getting in the money on a few occasions. He showed ability to run in the heavy going and, for that reason, we like him for the small end of the purse. MAYBERRY— EMBRYO— POLYFENA. The Atheling II. colt, MAYBERRY, which races for the Golden State Stable, proved to all concerned that he could travel in the mud last Saturday, when he was home the winner of his race by ten lengths. The race proved nothing more than a canter for him. and we expect him to duplicate that performance in the third, a five-eighths dash. He is to pack the same weight over the same distance of ground, and the contenders are hardly up to those which he conquered in his last out. EMBRYO and POLYFENA put up an exciting finish in their last meeting. The latter was victorious, but we are looking to EMBRYO to reverse that decision today. GPN SIGHT— BOSH— LEVOY. The James Fitzgerald Purse, to be run as the fourth, is a mile event and brings together an evenly matched field. The recent winner, GUNSIGHT, is our selection to cop this heat He raced over the new Trimble bourse distance without much effort and, at the end, was drawing clear by five lengths. The shorter distance should prove to his advantage, and we look to see him score by as large a markin here. BOSH usually shows her best form in the mud and, for that reason, we give her the call for the place. LEVOY can do much better than his race of Saturday showed. He is an exceptionally good mudder when in the mood, and today should find him much closer up at the finish. SAKOLA— MOKDAY MORMSG-TOM P. The fifth and feature race, the P. J. Carr Handicap, named in honor of the popular County Treasurer, should result in a good contest, as some of the best performers on the ground are entered here. The consistent SANOLA gets in with 97 pounds and. if a capable rider can be found to ride her at that weight, she should prove best here. The much improved MONDAY MORNING, which was a winner last Saturday, will very i likelv be the contender in the race if his ! last out was no fluke. He found the going to his liking, and at the finish was several lengths to the good. TOM P. is in good form at present, and he will be heard from if he races back to his last out. PARADER— BOIVFIRE— SETTEE. PARADER made his The Whitney -bred first appearance her last Saturday when he managed to take the show portion of the purse. He was coming fast at the end and. had the race been a little longer, he may have given the winner some trouble. Todays test is at a mile and seventy yards, and this distance should be better suited to him. BONFIRE was a winner in the mud at Tampa last winter and, in his last race here, got the place. Basing on his best form, he should be the one to account for the place. SETTEE is long overdue, and this spot may find him getting the show-end of the money. He, too, likes the muddy gping. STEYEKS — C. T. "WORTHINGTON— LATIN I A. In the good night tilt. STEVENS looks to be the best play. He has proved very-useful in a racing" way here, landing in the money in three of his four starts, including one win. If the mud does not prove too much of a hindrance, we think he will be the one to score. G T. WORTH INGTON is a sprinter of known ability, and how he will fare at the longer distance of a mile and .seventy yards remains to be seen. His last race indicated that he is fit and. if the distance is not too long for him. should be the contender in the race. LAVIN1A usually shows to best advantage in the sticky going and. on that score, we give her the call for the show. | One Best Bet — MAYBERRY, in the Third Race.
