COLLINSVILLE. 111., June lb— Another prospective formidable Derby candidate loomed this afternoon in Dr. Cardenas, which scored in the Journal Purse, serving as the principal offering and bringing to the post six three-year-olds to race a mile and seventy yards. Dr. Cardenas scored his success in the most hollow style, drawing out from the others during the stretch to win as his rider pleased. Dawn o Virginia finished in second place, finding little difficulty towards the end to outstay the swerving Grayling. Golden Mac, Gettysburg and Spanish Star were the other starters, iolden Mac again displayed .roughish ways and refused to extend himself when reaching the stretch. Dawn o Virginia and Grayling were the early leaders, accompanied by Golden Mac, and Dr. Cardenas far out of it in last place. The veteran I.. Morris was riding a confident race on the latter and made but feeble effort to improve his position until half of the distance had been consummated. When he did call on Dr. Cardenas, he moved with rapid strides and swiftly took command and ultimately won as his rider pleased. Dawn o Virginia, holding on gamely, showed a good performance. TURK ATE NIX« WEATHER. Threatening weather, following a brisk rain during the night, held the attendance down to regulars, but a goodly attendance was on hand at that. The racing offered was an ordinary one, enabling the more humble here to earn purses. Some of the racing was spectacular. Most of the finishes were hard fought. Twelve of the top and bottom variety comprised the field in the opening race, and it resulted in a spirited finish, with H. G. Bed wells Fore Lady the winner by a short neck from Princess Darrell. and Al Stebler following the pair a short margin away. Princess Darrell and Fore Lady fought it out stubbornly all during the last sixteenth, with Al Stebler also gaining strongly in spite of having been ridden extremely wide. Garr was another factor for most of the way but began giving way when he reached the final eighth. Jockey Philpot was a post offender on Continued on eighteenth page. DR. CARDENAS FIRST Continued from first page Island Fairy and Lady Bountiful, two starters from the St. Louis Stable and respective favorites in the second and third races. With Island Fairy he was entirely unprepared on account of inability to keep her straight. She was allowed to turn just as the barrier was released, causing her to be practically left at the post. He did not persevere with her in the running, and she remained far out out it for the entire distance. Battle On was the victor after a hard effort to down Coyne. The latter raced improved though incompetently ridden. Street Liz, coming from far back, finished in third place. Lady Bountiful was another to suffer as a result of Philpots lack of post alertness. She began tardily and was in the last place in the first sixteenth. She moved up determinedly and was going strongly In the stretch when Philpot took her back sharply and went around Porto de Oro. This cost her much ground, and Lupine, going in his ! best form, repeated the good victory he j scored in a previous start and won handily from Lady Bountiful. Porto de Oro finished third, beating home the disappointing Sandalwood. The fourth race brought out an ordinary band of maidens and resulted in a victory for Ilocksea. The Audley Farm Stables representative had to be urged hard to wear down Amir. The latter, after showing most speed, tired slightly but finished many lengths in advance of Cluricaune for second place. j Jockey P. Gross drew a five day suspen- j sion Saturday from the starter for disobedience at the post. He was lucky not to i j have drawn a suspension for the meeting from the stewards for his seeming rough riding in the sixth race.
