Juno 11- No racing trophy that has been exhibited at Belmont Park, and many fine examples of the goldsmiths and silversmiths art have been displayed there-some of them the product of hands that were active more than two hundred years ago — surnases in artistir worth that of the Fenian Cup. donated by Mrs. Wflinor RfillOOt as a memorial to her husband. August Pelmont. the late chairman of The Jockey Club and the former president of the Westchester Racing Association, under Whose auspices the Behnont Stakes is offered. This Cup. and the Plate that was given as a permanent offering to the owner of the winner of the Behnont Stakes, decided last Saturday, by the Westchester itacing Associate n. bad attracted a lot of attention the past few days. The racing public will be interested in the appended correspondence between Mrs. Belmont and the Westchester management. preliminary to the transfer of the trophy: 45 CBDAH BTRKBT. dune 7th. 1921 The Westchester Racing Association, 2" ti Park Avenue, New lorn city. Gentlemen: It gives me pleasure to present to the Westchester Racing Association the silver trophy won by The Fenian in the Belmont Stakes in 1869. I am making this gift in memory of my husband and request that the cup be known in the future as The August Belmont Memorial Cup. and that it may become a permanent trophy for the Belmont stakes, to be held by the winner of each renewal of the Stake until won by a succeeding winner. I understand that the association will add at each renewal of the stake a suitable piece of plate to become the permanent property of the winner. My dear Mrs. Belmont: I beg to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 7th inst. arid have received from Cricbton and Co., I,td.. the handsome silver cup won by "The Fenian" in the Belmont Stakes of 1S69. Your grift of this beautiful trophy to this associate »... in memory of the late Major August X*».unont. will be deeply appreciated by all tin turf. As desired by you. the Cup will be known in the future as the August Belmont Memorial Cup and will be contested for annually in the renewal of the "Belmont stakes" at Behnont Park, the winner of each renewal to ret i in possession of the cup until the succeeding year. Westchester Racing Association will present to tin- winner each rear a suitable plate to become the permanent property of such Winning owner. We are now preparing this plate, on which will be engraved a reproduction of the three sire Strains of the thoroughbred horse namely, Eclipse, Herod and Ifatchem, each stallion being within a chap-let of oak leaves, and a fourth chaplet within which will be engraved a suitable reproduction of the thoroughbred horse saddled for racing. In the center of the plate there will be a fifth chaplet of leaves, within which the aaaatal winner will be suitably described. Our purpose is to endeavor to symbolize, as nearly sis possible, the theme embodied fn the wonderful trophy presented by you in memory of your hushand. which so graphically depicts the story of the thoroughbn d horse supported by the avove three leading sires of thoroughbred stock in this count ry. hi behalf of "he Westehedter Racing Association, its president and directors.
