UNEXPECTED TRIUMPH — i Erratic Pigeon Wing II. Outlasts Arcady in Vernon Manor. 1 Count Sprack First in Devou Park Purse — Pat Calhoun in Hard Final Drive. • ; L.ATONIA, Ky., June 21— The unreliable Pigeon Wing II. gave another erratic performance here this afternoon M he won the Vernon Manor Handicap at three-quarters In the fast time of 1:11%. Arcady finished second with Prince of Wales third and such upeedsters as T. S. Jordan, Senator Morris, Botanic and Little Visitor unplaced. This afternoon Pigeon Wing II.. which ran out in his two previous races, again bore out as ;oldie Johnson took him around tlie turns. This time it was to his advantage as he carried Prince of Wales and Little Visitor far to tlie outside and then came on to catch the tiring Arcady in the last thirty yards and heat him by a neck. Prince of Wales was moving up rapidly on the outside when Pigeon Wing II. forced him out beyond the center of the course and when the Mclean colt was taken up to be steered through on the inside the ultimate winner gathered a lead which was too much for Prince of Wales to overcome. He landed two lengths behind Arcady and but a nose In advance of T. S. Jordan, which made the pace to the stretch where Arcady moved to the ore. The winner was over the three-quarters of a mile in 1 : 1 1 Vf. - duplicating a previous winning performance by the Croissant colt. TRACK AT ITS BEST. The race was staged over a perfect track but beneath dark clouds and the racing thoroughbreds did the home stretch against a strong wind. Another large crowd was on hand. The BtOOfnfieM Stables four-year-old fount Sprack ran the one mile and seventy yards of the I»evou Park Purse in 1 :42af. to win right handily over Cupids Curse, Barbara and fiv«- other fair ones. The winner dominated the running at every stage while fully extended at the finish and had a two lengths margin over Cupids Curse, which was driving hard to hold IJarbara rearward. The opening race brought a surprise triumph for Caloosa. which won in a drive from Scrimp at the finish of three-quarters. Overdraft finished in third place with the more highly fancied among the unplaced eight. Scamp came from last place to lose by the skimpy margin of a hiad. while Sarah J ay, the betting choice began very slowly out of an assistant starters hold. War Tidings gave a fair performance on the occasion of her first appearance under colors, when she gamely raced to the end of the five furlongs of the second race a mere head in front of Sophronia Fair, with Clover Club third. The latter had the most speed from the start, but the winner was through on the inside stretch and after disposing of the pacemaker held Sophronia Fair safe over the last sixteenth. thrilling struggle. The third race brought a thrilling finish between the stoutly supported Pat Calhoun and the much neglected Christopher, Um former winning the chief verdict after a bruising drive during the last eighth of the .one mile and seventy yards course. The ■winner was given a well timed ride hy H. Finncrty. getting up in the last thirty yards. The Janitor finished in third place. Peach ■gave an excellent performance in winning easily from seven other two-year-olds at five eighths in the fourth race. She dashed •to the front with the start, gave a high order of speed and was going steadily and with much in reserve as she finished the race in advance of lr. Streett. her closest opponent. She was over the distance in 1:00%, a fine performance under prevailing conditions. Third place fell to Amy A. Trainer . Hughes withdrew I.eo J. Marks colt Canaan from the Harold Stakes Satur-jlay because the eolt had "thrown a splint." The mishap will prevent the colt from starting again at this meeting. C. B.
