Ont., June 21.— The Thorold Handicap, for Canadian-breds at a mile and seventy yards, was the feature offering of the Niagara Racing Association today, and with the finish, came the first win for the Seagram Stable since the Hamilton meeting. Beau of the West carrying the famous black and yellow to an easy victory over some of the best home-breds sporting colors. Erickson had the mount on the Seagram starter and hustled him into a prominent position in the early running, being content to wait off the pace cut out by Seven Oaks until his rider deemed it advisable to go after the leader. This feat was accomplished with little effort, as he assumed command entering the home stretch and came away to win well in hand. Attack, coupled in the wagering with Forecast II., took down the second money, while the latter accounted for the minor end of the spoils. Summerlike weather prevailed for the first time in a fortnight, and there was a large gathering on hand to witness the various offerings, with favorites showing in the limelight in most instances. The track improved considerably over Saturday, and faster time was recorded during the afternoon. New Beauty, sadly overlooked in the wagering, accounted for the sixth race, which brought out one of the best fields of the afternoon to traverse five and a half furlongs, with Talladega a fast going second, and Eaddie Buck, starting for the first time on a Canadian track, finishing third. New Beauty went into the lead, closely pressed hy Eemnos for the first half mile, with the others well grouped, but none were able to take the lead from the winner, which stuck to her task in better fashion than is her custom and lasted to win by a neck. Those that fancied her chances were rewarded by a good return from the pari-mutuels. Form players centered on W. J. Salmons War Dress with a vengeance in the days opening race, a five-eighths dash for two-year-olds, and she upheld the confidence placed on her, when she accounted for the large end of the purse in a thrilling drive with Fallen Eeaf, getting up in the last sixteenth to get the award by a length, while Fallen Leaf had little trouble in saving second place from Sparkling Water. The latter raced head and head with Fallen Leaf for the first three-eighths and then tired. Continued on twentieth page. BEAU OF THE WEST FIR.T Continued from first page while the winner came from third position. Favorite followers made it two in a row. when they set their fancy on Body Ouard in the second race, an event at one mile. Ten starters faced the barrier in this contest. Body Ouard went into the lead going to the first turn. Mooney rated his mount along under slight pressure until rounding the far turn, where Timeless, who had been racing at the winners heels the entire way. made a bold effort to overtake him but tired when the real issue came, being beaten a length, while Harp of Prophecy came from far back to get the show award, while the remainder were more or less strung out. Balto. carrying the colors of the Nevada Stock Farm, successfully carried the gold and silver to a hard earned victory in the third, a five and one-half furlongs dash for two-year-olds, this being the first time that juveniles have been asked to travel the intermediate distance this year. Balto, In his winning performance, made the running from the rise of the webbing and, stalling off repeated attempts from W, J. Salmons Artifice, led the latter past the finishing line by a short length. Artifice loomed up as a certain winner making the turn into the home stretch but wore out badly and ruined a chance to break into the winning list Balto was installed the choice of the contest, making it the third victory for form students. Wormwold and Peternel were the winning combination in the fourth race at a mile and one-sixteenth, in which a field of five paraded, with Hijo from the Boss barn being installed a luke-warm choice. He flattered his backers by outrunning his rivals to the first turn but his lead was of short duration as Powder moved into command half way down the back stretch and held to the leader until the turn for home where The Missus went into a brief command, hurt was unable to stall off the winners rush. Her-kert. following his good showing against such good performers as Joy Smoke and Token on Saturday, was accorded stout support but failed to show any speed at any stage of Uncontest, he being a follower from the rise of the barrier until the finish, much to the dismay of the crowd.
