CANDY QUEEN IMPRESSES Chicago Owned Kentucky Derby Candidate Works a Mile in 1:44 Un text ended. Chicago devotees of racing were pleased to learn of the fine work of Candy Queen at Churchill Downs. Monday. This gallant filly is the property of the Chicago sportsman, II. T. Archibald, and if another filly is destined to share with H. P. Whitneys Regret the honor of winning the Kentucky Derby, many believe that Candy Queen may l e the one. This undersized roan filly, which is no larger than a two-year-old, gave trainers of other Derby candidates food for reflection by her latest work, a mile in 1 :44. without being extended. It was by far the best of the s?ason. Candy Queen was fighting for her head all the way. and her rider had all he could do to keep her in hand. From a time standpoint the work was not sensational, but it was the easy manner in which she galloped the mile that impressed horsemen. The fractional time was :12%, :25Hi. :50%. 1:04. 1:18 and 1 :4b Trainer George Walker, a horseman of many years experience, was enthusiastic over the fillys work. He decared that in his opinion she is further advanced in her prepa-tation than any other I erby apirant. "I believe that were the Derhy to be run next week Candy Queen would win easily," was trainer Walkers declaration when the filly was being led off the track. ♦
