TIP TOP VICTORIOUS * Scores Lucky Triumph Over Contemplate in Princeton Handicap. • Careless Ride of V. Stott Held to Blame for Defeat of Flamingo Stables Color Bearer. • BOWLE, Md. April 6.— Tip Top. from the Greentree Stable, was winner of the Wednesday feature offering at Bowie, when in a driving finish, she just beat home the Flamingo Farm Stables Contemplate in the six and one-half furlongs of the Princeton Handicap. It was a lucky victory because Contemplate was easily best and her defeat could be charged to a careless ride by Stott. while C. Watters rode a particularly strong finish on Tip Top. There was a return to delightful weather, but the track was about at its worst, being heavy and holding from the recent rains. During the day it was drying out some and it will undoubtedly be better for the racing tomorrow. Aside from the Princeton Handicap the card was composed of races for cheap ones and about the only happening of interest was a disgraceful race run by Long Point. After the running a message was sent to the press stand that the horse had bled, but his race was so altogether dull from the rise of the barrier that it seemed to be not much of an excuse. CONTEMPLATE FAVORITE. Six went to the post for the Princeton Handicap, which was for the three-year-olds, and on his victory in the Capitol Handicap, and his close second to Aucilla in tlie Inaugural the opening day. Contemplate attracted most of the attention. That he was beaten can be charged against Stott. The start was a good one and Pleasant Smiles was rushed into command, with Contemplate following after her and Sun Forward in third place, while Tip Top raced at the heels of the Kilmer cast-off. The others were strung out. with Long View and Artilleryman bringing up the rear. It was not until nearing the stretch turn that Contemplate drew up on Pleasant Smiles and there both of them went wide, while Watters cut in close with Tip Top. He saved much ground by the move, though he raced in the heavier footing. An eighth out Contemplate had Pleasant Smiles put away and he looked all over a winner and Stott was beginning to take matters easily. All this time Tip Top was gaining gamely next to the rail and. too late, Stott went to a drive on Contemplate. The Dominant filly was in full stride anil she would not be denied, while Stott was trying to arouse a tired horse atte.- having him in a measure eased. It was impossible and the filly dropped her head down in front. Artilleryman, coming with a great rush in the last quarter, was along to beat the tired Pleasant Smiles half a length for third. EASY FOR MERCEDES E. Mercedes E.. from the New Jersey Stable. was an easy winner of the mile and seventy yards of the sixth race, leading home Mis A. Swenkes Tipperary Mary, which just beat Gnome Second, from the Iastime Stable for the place and Tahoma was fourth. Gnome Second was the one to cut out the running, but Mercedes E. was never far away and when called on she raced to the son of Gnome, and on by him to be home winner by half a dozen lengths. Tipperary Mary in the meantime had been ste idily working her way up and tight at the end she nailed the early pacemaker, to beat him by a head for second place. Gray lings Lady, of which a good race was expected, had no excuse and was at no time a serious contender. There came a bit of a surprise in the open-ing half mile dash, for two-year-old maidens, when Linen King, from the Pastime Stable, nosed out Edward 15. McLeans Algid, with William Garths Bird wood rather a distant third. There was a long delay at the post, but the start was a good one with Itirdwo xl and Algol a bit more alert in leaving than the others. Linen King began from a | os:-tion further out on the track and in better going, but he was outrun by the other two. Birdwood had Algol headed, hut he could not come clear ami its a result was kept down on the inside where the going is at its worst. Then before the stretch was reached Algol was giving Birdwood such a stiff argument that the Garth youngster tired. But all this had taken something out of Algol and Kllis was iharging along on the outside with Linen King ami he had a decided advantage in the going. Stride by sride he drew up on Algol until in the last he dropped his nose down in front. ;. C. Winfreys Wild Aster was an easy winner of the six and a half furlong second race, defeating The Seer from the Greenwich Village Stable with Donetia a distant third. The others followed along with F M. Kellys Long loint. far back and so badly outrun ttuiitiuued ou ttiinl MflhJ TIP TOP VICTORIOUS Continued from first page that he was being eased up by Robbins. His performance was a particularly disgraceful one in the light of his recent victory, even though he was asked to shoulder 122 pounds through particularly difficult footing. The start was a good one and Long Point was in the lead at the start but he lacked speed and began to drop back from the first stride. Lemnos raced into an early lead with Washington chasing after him and Wild Aster close up, showing the way to The Seer. It did not take Wild Aster long to dispose of Lemnos, and Washington was next to drop back while The Seer began to improve his position. In the stretch Wild Aster had no trouble to win by three lengths while The Seer was five lengths before Donetta which in turn outstayed Washington for third place. After the race Long Point came back to the scales apparently uninjured from his gallop though his race Yvas such a bad one that many were of the opinion he had broken down. Later word was sent to the press stand that the horse had bled in the running, but there did not appear to be any evidence of such an occurrence. He had shown dull speed from the rise of the barrier and did not quit as though from bleeding. It was an inexcusably dull race. About as bad a lot as could be gathered together on any track went to the post in the six and a half furlong third race, and it gave P. P. Robies old Ed Pendleton a chance to win a purse when he scored in a driving finish from J. C. Fletchers Davenport and J. Bookers Clarimonde Hope, .larimonde Hope was the one to set the pace and in the early stages she was rushed into a lead of a couple of lengths with Kd Pendleton and Gaffer chasing after her. Davenport was farther back and it was not until the stretch was reached that he raced into a contending position. Kd Pendleton raced Clarimonde Hope into defeat before the eighth post was reached but at the end had to give his best to save the purse from the fast finishing Davenport which would probably have been winner under stronger riding. It was another cheap field that started In the thre-quaiter mile fourth race and W. J. Owens Fable was home the winner from W. Skinkers Dangerous Kitty with Sam Louis Ourieda saving third place from Star Mirth, while Indian Light, one that was greatly fancied before the race, was never a serious contender. Dangerous Kitty was the one to set the pace, but Fable was never far back and in the stretch she got up to score with something in reserve. Dangerous Kitty only tired in the final eighth. a
