SHOWS IMPROVEMENT ♦ Change for Better in Weather and Track at Aurora. • Captain Donan Provides Big Surprise in Carrying Off Principal Race of Ladies Day Card. AURORA. 111.. April 25.— There was a decided change for the better in weather and track conditions at Exposition Park this afternoon and as a result the racing was much Improved and the sport on a higher plane. The second Ladies Day program of the meeting brought a generous gathering of the fair sex and the attendance was in keeping with the record crowds that have turned out since the inaugural on April 21. In the absence of any outstanding feature attraction the fifth race served as the leading offering of the afternoons sport. It was a five and a half furlongs dash fashioned for sprinters of the better class quartered at the Fox River Valley course. Victory and the purse went to the Joliet Stable, when their Captain Donan. piloted by jockey .1. Bollero. scored a rousing success. His triumph here was an immense surprise and the eventual winner was afforded little support in the wagering and handsome returns were paid his few supporters. Theo. Fay was the one t garner the place award, while Dr. Ibarra bee landed home in advance of the others. The failure of Paul Weidel II.. the favorite, was a great disappointment to his many admirers. CI.OSKLY FOIGIIT CONTEST. Ten two-year-old maidens met in the opener over the four and a half furlongs distance, and a close fought contest resulted. Mrs. V. J. Potters Hayess Choice, with jockey R. Zucchini in the saddle, proved the sturdier of this band of youngsters and was returned an easier winner. Bill Seth garnered the place money, while the unlucky Peep o. raced to third place. From a fine start they raced closely bunched to the turn for home. Brockway and Bill Seth alternating in the lead. At this point a heavy spot in the going exists and the two were seemingly suddenly mired, permitting the fast coming Indra to take the lead. Meanwhile Hayess Choice began gaining steadily and rapidly overhauled the tiring Indra. and was able to handily stall off the closing bid of Bill Seth. Peep O. secured the show position after having to overcome serious interference from the start. Aleto, racing in the colors of R. Kdwards and ridd.-n perfectly by the diminutive jockey M. Ryan, proceeded to make a showing of his opponents in the second event and. during the last ipiarter of the race, came away with ease to win as his rider pleased. Rocking, a keen factor all the way. took the place. Monteagle, a lightly regarded one, earned the minor award. In the larly stages Martins Caddy showed startling speed in the rout;h n« ing and seemed to have victory alm st assured when the fleet Polycarp. racing in eli.se pursuit, was unable to gain on the leader, but when the stn tch was reached the pacemakers began to weaken and those in the rear began closing up. Aleto was brought around the outside into a long lead, finishing eight lengths to the good at the end. Rocking held determinedly to second place, while Monteagle. afl-r racing in last position to the stretch, finished with a fine burst of si eed and easily to k third money. EXTREME Ol IM I Kit SCOKKS. An extreme outsider scored in the third dash, when M. Sanders Pop Ryan cantered through the final eighth of the stretch run to an ea.sy win over Fire Boy. Servitor and six others. The rough going had much to do with the out-of-the-oi dir.ary running of the race, causing a deaith of interference. My Biddy was away fast and vied with Cas Welch and Nereid in leading for the first quarter mile. She stopped to a walk m-aring the half-way mark so suddenly as to impede the prograss of Cas Welch and Nereid. Bob Ryan. Fire Boy and Servitor, racing wide and in the batter goinn. then moved around the lead-is and dominated the running thereafter, finishing in the order named. The first favorite of the afternoon got home winner in the fourth race when Meddling Seth, showing a return to his best form, raced to an easy win o.r a band of ten sprinters. Jim Bethel, making his first start since the New Orleans meetings, took second place after a stretch battle with Singing Cricket and Bob Spalding, while the latter proved best for third place Singing ricket was prominent in the early stages when she led for the first quarter of the distance, giving way then to the reso- •jiitinij. il on twentieth i«ge. SHOWS IMPROVEMENT Continued from first page lute challenge of the winner Meddling Seth, after taking command at the lower turn, was never headed and finished with speed in reserve. W. R. Padgetts Treasurer, starting for the second time at this meeting, made good in the closing race, when he bested Hyperion in a hard stretch struggle to annex the major portion of the purse. Hyperion, after leading by a wiJe margin for the first seven-eighths, tired in the final drive, but lasted to take second place decisively. Foolscap wound up in third place. Levoy, from which much was expected, had no excuses and could not threaten the others at any stage, finishing far out of it O. Viaus four-year-old filly Dannie turned the sixth contest into a runaway affair when she cantered in the lead of her opponents the entire mile of the race, scoring with ridiculous ease, further adding to the failure of the favorites to annex purses this afternoon. Jockey F. Serembra rode the winner and, having her away sharply at the start, moved far into ine lead at the half mile, making every post a winning one. Sweep-tona came from far back in the last quarter mile to be up at the end to beat Fehrah ten lengths for second place. Fehrah was considerable of a contender most of the way, but lost ground and seemingly faltered at a crucial stage in the stretch, managing, however, to attain the minor award.
