DERBY GALLOPS AT DOWNS ♦ War Eagle Goes Mile in 1:42 y5 and Mile and Eighth in 1 :58 2/5 . Candy Queen Delights Her Owner H. T. Archibald by Another Splendid Exhibition — Candy Blackbird Also Good. ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 25.— The scheduled work-day for the Derby candidates War Eagle and the Archibald pair. Candy Queen and Candy Blackbird, found them ready for the test and the former shaded the mark of the gray filly by one-fifth of a second for the mile. Louis Tauber, trainer of the Man o War colt, had him out early for his trial and placed Nick Huff aboard the colt, instructing him to break at the stand and work back to the starting point. The fractional time of the effort of War Eagle given out by his trainer was :2Z%, :49%. 1 :02%. 1 :15%. 1 :42Ms for the mile, after which he eased up a mile and an eighth in 1 :5873. Nick Huff, who assisted in the preparation of the Derby winners Sir Barton, in 1919. and Paul Jones, in 1920, said that War Eagle worked as well as either one of these Derby winners and that he had every confidence in the ability of the son of Man o War to repeat the performance of his predecessors. H. Teller Archibald was accompanied from his home in Chicago by Ben W. Lord of the Chicago Veneer Company, who. the former claimed, was responsible for Archibald entering the "sport of kings" by the acquisition of his now formidable racing stable. Mr. Lord has two boxes reserved for Derby Day. having seen every Derby run in the last twenty years and would not miss the coming event under any consideration. Trainer Walker used Candy Star as the workmate of Candy Queen as usual this morning and, while the former was no match for the gray filly, her presence kept Candy Queen at her task, possibly as well as if she had been worked with some horse that could keep up with her. She is a good work-horse, honest to the core and gives her best at all times. This pair broke at the stand and Candy Queen dashed to the front. Leo Mc-Dermott allowing her to keep two lengths separating her from Candy Star, until the stretch was reached, where she draw away from-Candy Star as if she was standing still. McDermott kept a stout hold of the gray Continued on twentieth page. DERBY GALLOPS AT DOWNS Continued from first page filly all the way and trainer Walker gave out the fractional time as :11%, 24 36% :49, 1:01%, l:15y5, 1:27%, 1:42% and galloped out the mile and one-eighth in 1 :57. Both owner and trainer were well pleased with the fillys trial and Mr. Archibald deemed the workout entirely satisfactorv. Candy Blackbird, with R. McDermott in the saddle and wearing his "specs," worked a mile in company with Candy the Great, which kept well up for the first half-mile, hut dropped out of the picture after reaching this point. Timed by trainer Walker fractionally, the black colt turned the first eighth in :11%, :25 for the quarter, :37% for the three-eighths, :50% for the half-mile. 1:03% for the five-eighths, 1:18% for the three-quarters, 1 :32% for the seven-eighths, and 1:47% as the final time. This colt shows improvement but will not do her best unless some horse is worked with him to keep him on his edge all the way. Johnny Schorr will keep K. B. McLeans Derby colt Jock in Maryland until after the running of the Preakness, to which stake he is eligible, according to word from Schorr to his trainer, Louie Tauber, who is handling War Eagle and others in the McLean string at Churchill Downs. Xat F. Dortch sent Zeus II. to the farm of A. V. Thomas to be fired for a bowed tendon and rested up until the unsound member heals. Dan Iehan sent his mare Queen Agnes to the Thomas farm to be bred to Clem Thie-sens San Vicente. ■ a
