WORKOUT , , Kentucky Derby Favorite Dazzles Onlookers at Churchill Downs • Displays High Order of Speed in Covering Mile in 1:39 1-5 and Galloping Out the Derby Distance in 2:09 — Gains Additional Prestige • LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 4. — Reigh Count, prevailing favorite for the Kentucky D?rby, blasted the hopes of quite a number of trainers of other locally trained aspirants and forged into even stronger favoritism for the race when this morning he showed one of the very best Derby workouts over the Churchill Downs track REIGH COUNT witnessed in a number of years. The handsome son of Reigh and Contessina worked a mile in the sensational time of l:391/f,, the one mile and an eighth in 1:53%, and galloped the Derby distance of a mile and a quarter in 2:09. After witnessing the gallop horsemen agreed that Mrs. J. D. Hertz colt is an outstanding figure in the 3 Derby, and that in his present superb j Corn there is no colt in the East that can beat him. Reigh Count, with Chick Bang up, went out with Reigh Olga, which had Larry Mills I on his back. After a preliminary canter once around the track the colts began from the ;:tand, with Reigh Olga having an advantage of four lengths. Turning into the back stretch the Berby favorite began to draw up to his stablemate, and near the three-eighths pole caught and passed him. In the straightaway down the home stretch, Reigh- Count drew away with ease and finished the one mile six lengths in advance. After completing the mile Reigh Olga was pulled up, but j Reigh Count continued on his way and after I j running another eighth was eased up and I galloped out the extra eighth. Bang had a whip, but he never found it necessary to use, it as Reigh Count went about his task in a j willing manner and was anxious to run. His I performance was all the more meritorious j ! when it is stated that he raced fully fifteen i J feet from the inner rail, while his pacemaker ! raved ground by hugging the rail for the ; j mile. Reigh Count was timed in the fractions :2ty5, :48%, 1:13ft. 1 :39V5. 1:53%, 2:09, i truly a fine showing. Owner Eong watched the work of his colt from the stand and was phased with it. Colonel Shaw was given an easy mile, running the disatcne in 1 :48%. He went the quarter in :26, half in :33 and I three-quarters in 1 :20. Sea Rip and Anita I Pcabcdy went out together for a canter over three-quarters. Sea Rips time was a fraction slower. W. T. Waggoners Sanrine and Stamford went out together and ran three-quarters in 1 :17%, going the half in :50 and five-eighths in 1:04. Martie Flynn, recently acquired by Stuyve-I sant Peabody, was given his first work over the local track by trainer Bob McGarvey. The colt showed to good advantage when he ran five-eighths in 1 :05. The Viking Stables Derby hope Lawley, which is being trained by Ed Trotter, pro-1 vided some excitement at Douglas Park when he ran three-quarters over a track that was deep in dust in the fast time of 1:13. Jockey Jake Heupel was up and got the colt to turn the quarter in :24, three-eighths in :35, half in :47%, five-eighths in 1 :00y5 and three-l quarters in 1 :13. The colt had to go wide entering the home stretch to avoid colliding with another horse. It was easily the fastest trial for the distance recorded at Douglas Park this spring. At the same track Tiger Flowers went a mile in 1 :43% and galloped an extra eighth in 1:58%. Two Dans ran a mile easily in 1 :47%, and D. F. Kelly, his stablemate, breezed a half in :51%. John B. McKee, acting for a wealthy California sportsman, today made an offer to , W. H. Whitehouse of ?17.,r.00 for his Derby colt Colonel Shaw. The offer was declined. John H. AVards Dodgson, regarded as I Reigh Counts most formidable western rival | for Derby honors, arrived this morning from Lexington a ith other horses belonging to the establishment, which races under the nom de course of the Everglade Stable. Dodgson came here with the reputation of being the peer of the Derby candidates that raced at Lexington, and his coming aroused no little interest. He and the other horses in the stable were put away in the same barn that shelters Reigh Count at Churchill Downs. I Dodgson reached here in splendid condition, I and his fine appearance elicued no end of -favorable comment. He was given only light : work after his arrival. The other horses in • the stable to arrive were Dunmore, Black Agate, Dacia, and the following two-year-olds : • all sons of Dodge : Jaredevil, Demon, Dobbin, Delightful and Discreet. I R. F. Lechleitier, owner of Golden Racket and Cartago, came from his home in Shelby- « ville to see his colts in action this morning. J Lon Jones arrived from his National Stock j Farm near this city with six horses that he will race this year. They are Colonel Gil-more.
