DERBY HOPES FROM EAST Prospective Candidates for Saturdays Big Race Arrive Safely at Churchill Downs. LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 14.— Three cars, carrying the vanguard of eastern-owned Derby candidates, reached the chute near Churchill Downs early this afternoon. The shipment, one that included what is believed to be a record number of intended starters for a single race, embraced the Derby hopefuls Sun Beau, Don Q., Petee-Wrack", Vito, Sortie, Strolling Player, Bobashela and Distraction. Sun Beau was accompanied by Spear Hock and came in charge of John Holm, while Willie Booth brought Petee-Wrack. R. A. Smith, J. H. Stotler, J. Fitzsimmons, M. Hirsch and M. Henderson sent their respective racers in charge of assistants. Holm expects trainer C. W. Carroll here to saddle Sun Beau for the Derby, and the various other trainers are also arranging to personally attend the saddling of their hopes for the coveted race. The Kenton Farms Typhoon, which showed a good performance in the Preakness, was due this afternoon from Maryland. He is consigned to W. F. Overton, trainer of the Kenton Farm horses at Douglas Park. Jockey J. Craigmyle, who will have the Derby mount on Sun Beau, was among the days arrivals.
