STARTERS IN FAIRMOUNT DERBY « Field of Eight Probable With Misstep, Martie Flynn, Toro and Jack Higgins Among he Foremost and Most Prominent Candidates or Saturday s 5,000 Feature Event • COLLINSVILLE, 111., May 30.— A field of eight will probably parade to the post in the 5,000 Fairmount Derby here Saturday afternoon, according to present indications. It will be a field of considerable quality, including six starters in the Kentucky Derby, two of which, Misstep and Toro, finished second and third respectively. | With five of the probable starters now on the grounds and definite assurance received that the three others would be shipped here for the race, officials of the Fairmount Jockey Club are making plans for the biggest day in its history and are hopeful this years Derby renewal will surpass in interest previous runnings Swhen Haste and Buddy Bauer were successful. The Le Mar Stock Farms Misstep, Kenton Farm Stables Typhoon. Phil Reuters Galahad, W. J. Currans Jack Higgins and Audley Farms Bobashela are the expected starters receiving their final preparations at the local track, while Toro, owned by E. B. McLean, Martie Flynn, property of Stuyve-sant Peabody, and Colonel Shaw, owned by W. E. Whitehouse, are expected from Churchill Downs. With the arrival of the Seagram Stables Solace from Canada the race will have an international aspect. Solace finished third to Victorian and Toro in the Preakness Stakes, and since has displayed good form in Canada. He is now in Chicago and is expected to be shipped here Thursday. Typhoon received his final stiff workout for the Derby when he went over the full distance of a mile and a quarter this morning in 2:08%, finishing in handy fashion. He had considerable weight up, running the I opening quarter in :24%, the half in :49, and three-quarters in 1:15. His time for the mile was 1 :42. He was under slight restraint throughout. Bobashela, Misstep and Galahad were given workouts of similar importance yesterday, the first two appearing between races during the afternoon. MOST IMPRESSIVE TRIAL. Bobashela turned in the most impressive trial when he negotiated a mile, with good weight up, in 1:38%. He went an additi nal eighth easing up, and completed the mile and an eighth in 1:53%. He was well in hand in the early stages, running the first quarter in :23, half in :47, and three-quarters in 1 :12. The track record for the mile is 1:38%. Misstep attracted wide attention when he appeared for a trial. He was sent a mile and an eighth and completed his task with consummate ease, as a matter of fact too easily, the rider failing to heed trainer Mose Lowen-steins injunction to hustle the colt in the final stages. He covered the mile and an eighth at an even pace in 1 :54, the first mile in 1:40%. Galahad worked the full distance of a mile and a quarter in 2:07%. He had 12G pounds up and performed impressively for the entire distance. Considerable ante-post betting is being indulged in on the race and prices on the probable starters fluctuate rapidly. Heavy commissions have come in the last few days for Misstep, Bobashela, Solace, Jack Higgins, Galahad and Martie Flynn.
