HERRICK AND ROLLED STOCKING Carry Oil Respectively the Harold Stakes and Enquirer Handicap, Twin Features of Attractive Saturday Program at Latonia * ■ LATONIA, Ky., June 16. — After almost two weeks of unfavorable weather and racing conditions, Latonia, for almost a half century one of the outstanding race centers of the country, this afternoon came into its own for the first time during j the current spring and summer meeting. There was offered renewals of the j Harold Stakes and Equirer Handicap as features of the afternoon program that was decided under conditions that could not have been improved upon. By far the largest attendance that has visited the course this year saw R. S. Clarks well backed Herrick race to victory in a driving finish with Edward Cebrians Naishapur in the forty-sixth running of the Harold Stakes, which brought out nine of the most capable masculine juveniles available. The stake was run 5 over five and a half furlongs and it was G. Bacharachs Disturb that was third to finish the course. Behind him came Eminence, Woolorac, Lee Cooper, Mayor Walker, Glenno and Judge Murphy. The winner, which raced to the first victory of his career, ran the distance in 1 :06% over the fast course and earned a purse of ,980 for his owner. He was ridden by E. Pool, contract rider for the Clark stable. Herrick showed his superiority almost from the start He raced with high speed, while disposing of Lee Cooper, as he set the pace from the barrier, around the turn and into the stretch. After little more than a half mile Lee Cooper began tiring and the winner sprinted into a lead of three lengths. Naishapur. however, had not been permitted to make his real challenge and responding with a belated burst of speed, he raced after the winner wtih a vengeance and was wearing him down fast in the final stages. A length back of Naishapur, Disturb fought it out stubbornly with Eminence and ultimately beat the latter by a neck for third. Mayor Walker, the E. B. McLean starter that enjoyed slight favoritism over Judge Murphy, failed to gain a seriously contending position at any juncture and Judge Murphy, after getting away slowly, encountered considerable trouble finding racing room. The Enquirer Handicap, renewed for the eighteenth year, provided J. W. Parrishs Rolled Stocking, winner of the Inaugural Handicap, an opportunity to score his second stake victory of the meeting. Racing under top weight of 118 pounds, he won handilv by a length from J. N. Camdens Hiram, a three-year-old, at the end of the one mile and a sixteenth. Lancer was third, followed by five other good ones from among the handicap performers. In taking down honors, which included a purse of ,820 and a handsome trophy, the gift of Edward Beale McLean, Rolled Stock- Continued on twenty-fourth page. e— [ _ , p.: J ;c , le ci fi p p " " ■ B A p Q _. 1 1 a g t ~ a ], j , ° 8 t d f t t , v i t | , * i t £ a j i . 1 ] I ; LATONIAS TWIN FEATURES Continued from first page. ing was always in front and raced at a fast pace to complete the distance in 1 :44Vfc. Crump had the mount, and the comhination ruled favorite with the bijr crowd. During the final three-eighths Hiram challenged him several times, but he met each without need of severe pressure. Just a length back of Hiram came Lancer at the end, where the latter had succeeded in out-finishing Genial Host, which raced out of last place with a burst of speed. Excepting only Forest Nymph, which had speed for a half mile, the others were always outpaced by tha winner and Hiram. The opening race, at three-quarters mile, developed a surprise wlven the suddenly improved Broomster showed a good perform-once to win from The Huguenot, Everlasting and the eight others that opposed him. After racing under restraint but in close pursuit to the stretch he quickly passed Mm leading Everlasting and went on gamely to outstay the fast finishing The Huguenot. Everlasting was the popular choice and flattered somewhat by an extended stay in the lead, but tired badly in the final test, yet was an easy third over Calvados, which began very sluggishly. Having a slight advantage at the start, H. P. Headleys Big Brother, a son of Tryster— Big Sis, led for the entire five-eighths mile to account for the second race, for maiden juveniles. His victory easily accomplished the finish, finding him three lengths in front of Nicaragua, which had just half as much distance to spare over Harvard. Excepting only for a brief time during the early running, when Agitation showed speed, it was always a race between the more successful trio, yet stronger handling might have established Alcman, which finished fourth, as a more formidable contender. Golden Prince, racing for the first time in the colors of T. M. Botts, provided another surprise when he outsprinted Canberra, Banter and eight others in the fourth race. This was for the better grade platers, and was decided over three-quarters mile. The victory was Heupels second winning mount. The winner exhibited speed from the start and, after rushing past Canberra on the turn gamely, held her safe in the last eighth. With Eord Marmion running poorly under A. Abel, the outsider, Peter Parley, fought it out successfully with Hornsby to be returned the winner of the third race. It was race at one mile and seventy yards, and the finish was exceedingly close, the victor representing Mrs. F. J. Uhleln, getting up to win by a head after overcoming some adverse luck during the race. Afterglow was third, three lengths in the wake of Hornsby and five lengths in front of Eord Marmion. The latter was raced wide after the first quarter, and Abel appeared to become rattled in the selection of a course for his mount during the final three-eighths. Lord Marmion shared favoritism with Hornsby.
